Playing games on CDTV -- Joystick/Mouse remote
« on: July 10, 2009, 06:08:11 PM »
I cant figure out how to use the stupid CDTV remote controller as a joystick for using floppy disk based A500 games on my CDTV .

I have connected an external floppy and tried using games such as Ninja Warriors or Lotus 2 .

The games load fine without any problems .

But i cannot get joystick control using the remote ...  If i press Joy/Mouse on the remote i get joystick control for about 5 seconds and then it stops again until i press the Joy/Mouse button again .

On Lotus 2 i actually managed to play for a whole 1 minute before it stopped working as a joystick .

I am using brand new batteries on the remote .

Am i doing something wrong ?

I remember back in the day chopping of the end of a quickshot joystick and soldering that to the insides of the CDTV remote. In fact, I cant remember if I soldered it or not, I might have just stripped the wires and taped it.

That is one thing about the CDTV that really bothers me.  Although it's built well and is pretty to look at, it's more trouble that it's worth to own one.  First you have to get a mouse ($$$), then a keyboard ($$$), then a joystick ($$$), then when your all ready to use it and play some games, you realize you need a hard drive!!!!!!  When it is all said and done, it is easier and more feasible and waay cheaper to use an Amiga 2000.  Way cheaper and more expandable.  I sold mine recently and don't miss it in the least.

Well , it looks nice as you said and i didnt pay 1 cent more than 10 Euro for mine and i have a keyboard , joystick , disk drive etc...

I think ill hang onto it for a bit , probably and mainly because i havent had a chance to use it properly yet .

But as you said , they are a lot of trouble ... Commodore's fault for marketing them as Set Top media boxes or whatever instead of as a computer .. In fact they are not even Amiga's even though they are Commodore and have OCS , Kickstart 1.3 etc...

You probably need a new remote they don't hold up all that well.

Most of the time when you buy a CDTV you get a complete set with CDTV, caddy, keyboard and mouse; the CDTV console alone isn't worth buying on its own unless you need it for parts.

And no, a harddrive isn't needed to play games on a CDTV, it will do fine on it's own with CDTV games, and just fine with floppy based games by using an external floppy drive.

You are right about the A2000 being easier to upgrade, but it has it's disadvantages as well.

It WAS the remote ... Thanks JC

My brand new CDTV remote arrived from amigakit today and now the CDTV is working perfectly ..  :)

Strangely the new remote has a switch for Joy/Mouse where the old one is a button .

Any idea what could be wrong with the old one ? It seems to work ok as a mouse but when i switch it to joystick it works for a few seconds than goes back to mouse .

Sorry for the necro-thread resurrection, but there was never a solution posted.

I just had a CD/TV controller with this problem. There's one 47uF 6V SMT capacitor in the CD/TV controller. When it goes bad (it's the same type as the infamous A1200 ones), it stops the power connection being smooth, so the controller resets back to mouse mode, meaning you have to press the joy/mouse button again.

One nice new 47uF SMT capacitor in there and it's good as new! Hurrah! :)
