Global Re-launch of COMMODORE by Tulip Confirmed
« on: July 12, 2003, 02:47:44 PM »
"In this partnership, Ironstone will create the official Commodore C64 games and community portal designed to focus and harness the power of the Commodore C64 user base and to efficiently provide the services required by these individuals for a fee. The founders of Ironstone are experienced and successful, in previous similar projects Ironstone achieved a subscriber to pay subscriber conversion rate that was unparalleled in the Internet space."

Frankly, the only one "crazy" here is Tulip if they really think they are going to create a worldwide fever for C64 games and applications.  Perhaps, the smartest thing they could do is make a deal with Jeri Ellsworth.  This could make sense, but it is still very much a niche.

We know how hard it is...;-)

Anyway, do not be surprised if you see an Atari coming into the market again soon in the same fashion.

Have a great day!

This doesn't sound good for the C= community for me - seems like they'll be getting as many fans over to their new "official" portal as possible, trying to remove competing portals and emus, and eventually gain a monopoly over the C= community.  What will people gain from this?

Hmm after reading that stuff it seems they will only do as they did with WebIT and release a PC branded with some OS perhaps Win/Nix/Etc and then a C64 emu if this is the case this is very uninteresting news at least to me.

What does Tulip  think they can acheive by re-launching the C=64??

Who would buy it? Guess it would only be the relatively few nerds (like me :) but wouldn't they prefer the CommodoreOne?  I will!

I could understand if they where just using the name and peoples tendancy to be nostalgic, to market a new console or something like that, but their current plan sounds really to far fetched.

Troels_E ----  I know one slightly similar case that had worked somewhat. Some old Matte Intellivision games have been licensed/ported to mobile phones and I think they have not been worst sellers either. But beoynd those I can't remember any successfull 8-bit revival.  (*)

Personally I think Tulip is like SCO ... a dying company desperately trying to hang whatever they have and suing others to squeeze some cash to keep afloat. Funny thing is Tulip has no self made technoloy, they just purchased old name and are plannin to use 3rd party emulator to make it all work.

Joanna

(*) And before someone points out.. Yes.. Mattel was actually 16 bit console.. But it was launched on 8bit era (well before C64)...

@JoannaK

It's not quite similar because many 8 bit games actually fit quite well too the mobile phones (thinking at how complex they are, simple graphics, sound etc..).

Even though they are pretty simple, most of the other products on celluar phones are also simple so they don't look so dated, as a C=64 game will do compared to an X-BOX game.

But it's also the only example I know of succesfull 8(16) bit revival.

And I could imagine your description of Tulip to be very precise..
