Wrong port cable instertion in A4000T
« on: July 06, 2008, 06:42:02 PM »
I accidentally inserted the cables from the motherboard to the port unit on my A4000T wrongly, i.e. I turned the cables 180°
I didn't see it before I booted the machine, it booted but the mouse didn't work. I then saw my mistake and powered off the machine. Since then I only get grey screen and no boot.
Has anyone else ever accidentally made the cable mistake and has that had any impact on your A4000T? If yes, what had to be done to fix it?

NooooooooooooOOOOOOOOO!

Gutted matey.

Have you tried changing the PSU or testing it with a multimeter? Chances are that swapping the cables round has caused a short between 12V and something (hopefully only ground). With luck this may have just 8uggered the psu, but it could have burnt traces, components, or even ICs.

Also, I'd examine the power header on the motherboard - these are (apparently) notorious for being not up to taking high current. Even a loaded system can cause them to fail over time, so a 12V-ground short most definitely could. Look for any discolouration or oxidation on the metal pins or plastic shroud.

If that doesn't work I'd recommend that you disassemble the motherboard from the tower, and examine both sides to see if you can find any burnt components/traces.

Here's hoping it's only the psu :-(
Mac Mini G4 (1.5GHz, 64MB VRam, 1GB Ram): MorphOS 3.6
Powerbook 5.8 (15", 1.67GHz, 128MB VRam, 1GB Ram): MorphOS 3.8.

I haven't noticed any burnt traces (looked at the board, both sides, carefully).
The Amiga powers on, there is a red-lit fan that runs and the PPC card fan runs as well which makes me think the psu does still work. The boot process just hangs with the grey screen (no activity from the CF card or floppy request when the CF card is not installed). Besides the Amiga booted "fine" without mouse working when I had initially made the cable mistake... I am wondering whether I might have blown a CIA chip? Those bas***ds seem to blow fairly easily...

The psu might still be damaged even if fans and such are running. Also try to run it without any expansion.

Easy to test: read the PSU voltage levels with the Amiga turned on.

+5V must be on 4.85~5.05 range. More than this and you blow every chip on boards! Less than 4.85 and the Amiga wont boot at all!

+12V rail must be on 10.5 to 12.1V range. It affects drives (HD, floppy, SCSI) and audio.

-12V: same range (just negative, of course). Affect audio only.

 -5V: dunno what for...:-?
Goodbye people.

I\'ll pop on from time to time, RL is acting up.

I'll check the psu... where do I find the pinout for the psu?
Btw, I tried booting it without any card except Disk module... it didn't help :(

When I bought my first A4000T the mouse didn't work. There was a burned trace on the ports board that I repaired with 30 gauge wire wrap wire. It was easy to see and find with an ohm meter. I bet I know how it happened now:-) The machine did at least boot like that however it still takes forever and a day to start unless I use 40.68 ROMs from a desktop machine.

Good Luck getting your "T" working again.

Oh, I'll check the ports module... the computer doesn't boot no matter whether the ports module is connected or not though :(

It has been working for a long time, just wanted to replace the capacitors with tantalum ones as the caps on the audio/video board had started to leak :( (even then the A4000T was booting)

I tested the PSU all values are fine.
I noticed that when I boot the machine I get "click" noises when I press the right mouse button (with the screen still being grey but showing scan lines). Also there were no traces that looked burned.

You`ve probably blown some Caps & possibly an IC chip or 2.

This guy had the same problems over here & also thought it was his PSU. Maybe it takes the cheaper PSU`s with it!?:

I tested the CPU power values and they are all in the good range. It all happened after replacing all the caps with quality ones... but I think I have blown either Paula and/or a CIA so I have ordered new ones (+ sockets) and will try to exchange those :)
