There have always been a handful of options besides paypal. Google just happens to have a bit of $$ backing to make something POSSIBLY worthwhile. Note, however, just because they have "endless" capital to develop this thing with doesn't mean it will end up any good (there are other Google services that are utter crap). I am hopeful, though, since Google has been wanting to make a "paypal killer" for a few years, at least.
Lets see if all their hard work pays off.
