Linux APUS for classic on a1200/bppc/mediator can't boot.
« on: September 29, 2005, 11:34:04 AM »
Hi 2 all. Today i try to setup on my 1200 ppc linux (apus) and have strange problem. I hope someone can help me with it. So, i use last bootstrap (bh010623.lha), 2.4-20-1 kernel (kernel-image-apus_2.4.20-1.lha) and last Ramdisk fs (apus-lp-ramdisk.image20000622.gz).

So, my config:
a1200, bppc with 060, mediator with voodoo3/realteck10mb, fastata,scandoubler.

Here is problem:

---------------------
amiga shell:> bootstrap  --apus -k apus/vmlinux-24 -r ramdisk.image.gz root=/dev/ram video=amifb:vga debug=mem

Linux/m68k Amiga Bootstrap version 5.6
Copyright 1993,1994 by Hamish Macdonald and Greg Harp

Amiga 1200 CPU: 68060 with internal FPU, AGA Chipset

APUS: No BPPC+ SCSI interface detected.
APUS: No PCI Bridge detected
Command line is 'root=/dev/ram video=amifb:vga debug=mem'
Vertical Blank Frequency: 50Hz
Power Supply Frequency: 50Hz
EClock Frequency: 709379Hz

Found 3 AutoConfig Devices
device 0: addr = 0x00ea0000
device 1: addr = 0x00200000
device 2: addr = 0x00f00c38

Found 1 block of Memory
Block 0: 0x76000000 to 0x79f00000 (64512k)
The kernel will be located at 0x76000000
Kernel is compressed
Uncompressing kernel image.....................................
..........................done
starting ppcboot_wup
Inhibiting filesystems: RAM: DF0: CC0: DH2: DH1: DH0:

---------------------

and totally lockup ! i tryed different kernels (2.2, 2.4), i tryed some older bootstraps, in any case - system halt after 'Inhibiting filesystems'

Can anyone to help ?

Well, APUS can be annoying sometimes.

Try using amifb:pal instead, and be aware that it takes half a minute or so before you see the penguin.

Does APUS support the mediator now? Linux with no gfx card has limited usefulness...

Linux-APUS does not support the mediator, nor will it
(perhaps Mediator 4000/3000, but that is a big perhaps)

regarding G-rex:maybe if you compile your own kernel, there is some sort of buggy BVisionPPC/CVisionPPC PCI-bridge support that can be enabled by compiling your own kernel.
Never tried it myself though, just used the standard framebuffer with my CV-PPC, and this is rather slow.

Oh yes, i can run it. I reboot with no startup sequence and run it:  bootstrap --apus -k apus/vmlinux-24 -r ramdisk.image.gz root=/dev/ram video=amifb:pal

wait about 30-40 seconds and all ok. (but, anyway in load stage i have string 'Unknow option video=amifb:pal').

btw, i tryed 68k linux too on my amiga. Some time ago (about 2-3 years) i run woody debian on my 040 and 060. Today, i try to run it on my bppc with 060, and have these ind of problem, after tons of loading i have:

.........
FD:probing units
found (5)fd: drive 0 didn't identify, setting default fffffff
fd0
md driver 0.36.6 MAX_MD_DEV=4, MAX_reaL=8
scsi-ncr53c7xx: NCR53c710 at memory 0x80f40000,io 0x0, irc 12
.........

and system halt.. btw, i do not have scsi on my bppc.
address of 0x80f40000 is strange too .. So, anyone to know how it can be solve ?

I believe there's some option in bootstrap to take care of the BPPC SCSI issue. The reason for your crash is the kernel looking for the non-existing SCSI controller.

regarding amifb:pal I can't quite remember the correct options, just read the docs. Pal Hires interlace would be the optimal resolution.

Oh and btw: APUS uses Power-LED flickering to indicate CPU activity, so with APUS, a flashing Power-LED is actually a good sign, as opposed to in AmigaOS...

also noticed something else, you apparently have a fast-ata controller
and there was something with that one with regard to linux-apus

you might want to join the amiga-mediator yahoo group
and ask about this (the linux-apus group seem's to have died
in its sleep, or I need to update my email address :-) )

The APUS-Team is currently working on a 2.6.13 Kernel. Maybe we can get this kernel and can run more modern Distributions with less problems.

I try to found info about 53c7xx driver in 2.2 in last (? 1999?) kernel-options.txt, and found only some subcommands like : nosync, noasync, nodisconnect, validids, opthi and optlo. Nothink about 'just off'. Maybe good way try to found 2.2 kernel with no scsi suppor, or do it some hacks in kernel binary file..
