You want some Live Amiga Chat...?

Then come and chat on the Amiga.org IRC channel on irc.zirc.org!

IRC is a fast, efficient chat system, far better for quick chats than web based systems like this forum. If you want to just chat about anything Amiga, or even just want to chill out and talk live to fellow Amiga users across the world - come on and join the chat.

#amiga.org is open 24 hours a day.

What do you need:

The easiest way to connect is via the web interface through a javascript enabled web browser. Just fill in the login form and click 'join the channel' here:
http://ajk.daug.net/amiga/irc.php

An alternative java client which also runs in a web browser (with the java plugin) can be found here:
http://www.zirc.org/chat/

These web clients are fine for occasional use, but the best solution is to run IRC client software on your computer. There are different clients for different operating systems, here are a few suggestions:

Amiga Users:
Mac Users:
Windows Users:
Linux Users:

Follow the instructions to install and accept the default settings. You may need to add ZiRC to the default IRC server list, some instructions for setting up and connecting to the server in the different clients follow...

Client Installation Instructions

mIRC and AmIRC:

  1. Fire up A/mIRC.
  2. Go to - File / Options / Connect
  3. If ZiRC is on the IRC Network list, select it. Otherwise add a new server and fill in these details:
    • Name: ZiRC
    • Server: irc.zirc.org
    • Port: 6667
  4. Fill in the the following details:
    • Fullname: Whatever you want
    • Email Address: Not your own (real addresses can be seen by others)
    • Nickname: As a rule: the name you use in the forum
    • Alternative: Another nickname just in case your first choice is taken
  5. Forget all other settings as they're not important at this stage.
  6. Hit the Connect to IRC Server button.

A long "message of the day" should scroll by in the main status window featuring all sorts of disclaimers and ASCII art - this is a good sign that you have connected! Well done!

mIRC Channels Folder Box...
If you are using a virgin freshly installed copy of mIRC a popup window will appear asking to enter a channel name. Type #amiga.org and click join... Voila you are here!

If the mIRC Channels Folder Box does not appear...
In the bottom box or line of the status window type:

/join #amiga.org and <enter> and again voila you are here!

WookieChat:

  1. Fire up the Wookie!
  2. Fill in the three nickname boxes under Nicknames with your Amiga.org nickname and two alternatives just incase it is already taken (hopefully it wont be.)
  3. Fill in the Real Name box with your real name (or anything you want.)
  4. Fill in User with your Amiga.org nick.
  5. Find and double click on Amiga.org in the list to expand the tree.
  6. Select irc.zirc.org 6667 if it is there. If all you have is one or more Webchat entries (our previous server) click it once to highlight it, click the Edit Entry button and replace the text in the server and port boxes with:
    • Server: irc.zirc.org
    • Port: 6667
...then click Accept and make sure the new entry is selected.
  7. Click Connect to Server.

After a short time you should automatically join the #amiga.org channel. Welcome!

X-Chat (Windows/Linux) and X-Chat Aqua:

  1. Fire it up!
  2. If the server list doesn't pop up at the start, select it in the XChat menu.
  3. Fill in the following details:
    • Enter your Amiga.org nickname in the Nickname box.
    • Enter two alternative nicknames in the Second and Third Choice boxes just incase your nickname is taken.
    • Enter your Amiga.org nickname in the User Name box.
    • Put your real name or anything you like in the Real Name box.
  4. Add ZiRC to the server list by clicking on the Add button and typing in the name ZiRC.
  5. Click Edit, then click Edit again in the window that appears to change the first entry of the Servers for ZiRC box. Delete what is there and type in:
    irc.zirc.org/6667 <hit return>
  6. Enter #amiga.org in the Channels to Join box, then close the Edit window.
  7. Back in the server list window, click Connect.

After a short while you should be connected and automatically join the channel. Hi there!

When you're connected

The network offers nick services for registering and protecting your nickname and much more besides. For more information ask us in the channel and/or see our FAQ:
http://ajk.daug.net/amiga/faq.php

There are also more localised ZiRC servers to choose from. A list can be found here:
http://www.zirc.org/servers/
...Simply substitute irc.zirc.org in the instructions above for your chosen alternative. You can also pick a different port number. Anything between 6660-6669 is acceptable. There is even a port for SSL connections (7001) if your client supports it.

All the Best,

The IRC Channel Operators
