Hi all,
I need some help getting my A1200 tower on-line. I've just ordered Virgin Broadband, and a Conexant modem/4port Ethernet router from Dabs. Next step to get my A1200 to share the internet connection, is to get a PCMCIA Ethernet card to connect to the router. Can anyone recomend a PCMCIA card for the A1200 for this? Or are there any cards to avoid etc? I do already have a card (it's a "WinCONNECT D-Link LAN/FAX/MODEM" card) but I don't have an Ethernet cable for it... and it has a small thin socket at the edge. Will this be some kind of standard port? ...could i save a few bucks and get a cable instead of a whole a new card? I know that Power Computing sell a card for the Amiga for £54.95 that apparently "Includes software and PCMCIA reset fix board". http://www.powerc.com/cgi-bin/psearch.cgi?code=444-0014&rn=20&aid=&uid=ss1gRASJevsylK.&sid=&cid=4&act =gpage :-o What's the PCMCIA resest problem? And will this be an issue? If your interested, this is the router i've bought from Dabs... http://www.dabs.com/uk/channels/hardware/modemsandadslhardware/productView.htm?quicklinx=17P8 :-o Also... (yet another question!) with OS3.9, will there be any other software I'll need? I believe it comes with a TCP/IP stack and browser?!? Thanks a million for any help on this! :-? Cheers, Chris. PS) Sorry for bombarding you all with questions! ...I seem to be in the right crowd here though :-D

OS3.9 has some basic software to get you on the web, it's all you Need, but there's better. Genesis (3.9's TCP/IP) is okay I hear, minus the lack of DHCP. The 1200 supports certain 16bit PCMCIA cadrs, note the 16bit. There are a couple drivers on Aminet, I think cnet is one of them. 3c509 cards seem to be popular (it's some 3com chipset) and you can get them for 10 USD or less. That odd connector needs what people call a dongle, so make sure to get one if you buy a new card (I'd bet you'll have to if that card is 32bit). Having never owned a 1200, don't know much about the PCMCIA fix, it has something to do with a reset signal, and is just annoying to work with, but i think it's just cutting a line or soldering one extra connection, and not really hard. That PCMCIA slot probly makes the 1200 the cheapest classic (other than 600) to get on the web...

To get a grip of the compatible PCMCIA ethernet cards check the compatibility list in cnet archive. While you're in aminet, get these 3 packs:
CardPatch.lha CardReset.lha cnetdevice.lha The first 2 are for the PCMCIA bugs. Both needed. The later one is the device needed for using the PCMCIA ethernet card. It is compatible with a variety of cards. You can check the list as i told to see what is supported and what not. I myself use them 3 and a Zoom X4 ADSL router modem, works flawless! :-D |
