Default Is there such a thing as instant death?

I don't think so.

Its because your brain is made of cell tissue. Cell tissue takes time to cease living. Like other tissue, it can cope with a loss of blood supply for a while, but slowly goes grey and dies.

So, applying this theory to the brain. Say, for example you were shot in the head (classic case of believed instant death).

Even if you were shot with a farily powerful gun and there was a huge hole in your head, your brain cells that survived the impact would still be functioning. But because your brain was so damaged, your thinking would be split into lots of disconnected little parts that couldn't really communicate with each other

Therefore, as the brain cells lost blood and slowly died, your thinking would get less logical and more isolated and chaotic until you couldn't think anymore.

Instant death? That would probablly only happen if all your brain tissue was vaporized at the same time or something like that.

Pretty please?

[dramatic acting][slow-motion]NOOOOOOOO![/slow-motion][/dramatic acting]

well, being seriously reacting on the thread question is: Your brain needs time to react. As far as I know, if you experience pain, braincells are active. If you die, these braincells become inactive so you should not feel any pain anymore at all. Then you're in heaven, like a drug addict.

Have you seen the damage some firearms can cause?

BBC Panorama did a documentary on american gun culture. They had a marksman from the NYPD demonstrating the damage some perfectly leagal guns could do. It was shocking many of them are designed to enter in a small hole and exit through a big one!

They were shooting blocks of some waxy plastic compound thing - to simulate the head. The insides were nearly hollow when shot.

My point those guns could hollow your brain out!

Why stop at the brain? Most of your body's cells live, even once disconnected from the brain. Hell, I have a kidney that's been living inside someone else. Almost forgot those fine occasions single cells I've deposited in a special location actually divided into whole new people, I'll never die! I'm immortal!

The Brain is very highly structured... if you significantly disrupt that structure, it doesn't work any more, thus you (as a person) no longer exist.

I think you can define instant death as an unrecoverable state, which causes the subject to be unaware of, or unable to understand the situation.

A horrible death would be having your head cut off... it takes the brain 3 min to die (due to lack of oxygen)... Those three minutes must seem like an eternity!

Well,

as long as the brain is intact, and remain unaffected by poisons and so, then no, you are not dead.

On the other hand, if your brain gets blown out, then the brain would no longer function, thus, you'd be dead.

It all depends on how you define "alive"; you could decapitate someone, and keep the body alive using heart-lung machines.

Imagine diving into a huge tank filled with liquid nitrogen! :-)
