Printing Problem
« on: April 25, 2004, 05:20:57 PM »
I have a Canon 4300 BJC-Printer, which presented the following
problem: It prints text/graphics with white stripes.

The ink tanks are full (brand new), and the cartridge is not clogged
(I even tried the Photo cartridge, and an old one BC-21, all with the
same problem).

Analytically: The "nozzle check pattern", is faulty on all cartridges,
and appears to be interrupted every 4 blocks, on all colours
simultaneously (black & CMY).

---Nozzle Check Pattern---
24 "4 blocks", "3 |", "4 blocks", "3 |", 24 "4 blocks", "3 |", "4
blocks", "3 |"
X3 (YMC)

64 "4x3 blocks", "3 |", "4x3 blocks", "3 |", 24 "4 blocks", "3 |", "4
blocks", "3 |"
(Black)
--------------------------

The strange thing is that the horizontal lines are present for 4
blocks, and then desapear from all the inks (CMYK) at the same time
for another 4 blocks, this repeated 2 times resulting in 2 white
stripes for each head pass.

Any help/suggestions is appreciated.

Has this problem developed suddenly or have you had trouble ever since setting it up? What driver system are you using?

Have you tried printing test pages from the printer by itself?

If they printed okay then you would know it was a problem with the data and not the cartridges or print head.

If the test prints didn't come out okay and you've said the tanks are full maybe you need a new print head.
Sincerely,

It developed suddenly, after a head cleaning procedure (off the printer, soaking the head in NH3 solution).

The nozzle check pattern, shows the same problems even if its started with no s/w call (canon utilities), but with the on procedure (4 beeps, with the power key pressed, no computer connected). I suspect a h/w problem, does anyone know how & why this kind of pattern is present?

Note:
When the ink tank is empty, or the head is clogged, the nozzle pattern prints white stripes only to the clogged nozzles, or the ink that is empty. The strange thing about it is that the lines are discontinuous on the same tracts for all the colours, presenting a standard pattern.

@sprocket

I have tested an unused photo cartridge/head and an old BC21 head, all with the same strange pattern.

Could it be the ribbon to the head, or the printer itself?!

You say, it happened *after* a head-cleaning procedure ? Usually white stripes are caused by dried ink in the head after the printer had not been used for some time. It can be cleared by cleaning the head several times.

That's true, white stripes usually mean that the ink is over, or the head needs cleaning. But in my case, I used a totally different head/ink-tank set (the BC-22e photo, and another BC-21e), all presenting the same white stripes!

Perhaps the cable from the printer electronics to the print head is damaged.

OK, repaired after a couple of weeks, and lots of frustration :-x.

I contacted the Canon service, and they told me that the culprit could be the "Purge Unit".

But the noozle patter was very suspicious for such a problem (very similar to empty ink tank, or faulty printer head).

I tested the ribbon cable that goes from the printer head to the electronics plate, and resulted normal.

So I sent it to the service, and got it back as brand new :-) It was a faulty diode on the logic circuit that caused the mayhem. It all costs 15 euros.
