Hi,
@iam 1. Look at the front of the box. 2. Speak nicely and softly to it. 3. If it does not turn on, try to kiss it. 4. Remember imacs are very sensitive. 5. Promise you will take it out to dinner. 6. If all else fails. 7. Devorce it. smerf How should I know, I never owned one, or looked at one. I have enough trouble finding the on switch on my Amiga and PC clones.

You’ll still have to press the Power On key on the keyboard to power up...(by the power of grayskull)..
The switch that looks like the power button just switches on the light...Doh! Er, press Command-Control-Power Key. This will reboot the computer. to reset 1)Open the cover on the right side of the iMac and locate the reset hole between the Ethernet <…>and modem ports. It has a small triangle icon next to it (it’usually the top hole). 2)Carefully insert the end of a large, straightened paper clip into the hole and push gently on the button inside. Do not use excessive force. Your computer should restart. 3)If the reset button doesn’restart the iMac, unplug the computer, wait at least 30seconds, then reconnect the power plug and turn the computer back on in the normal way. 4)On a G3 blue/white,the reset button is on the front panel under the power button. The reset button has a triangle and is on the left. 5) don`t know Good luck!

I believe there is a power button on the rear of the system somewhere. (Right side as looking at the back?) I have been looking at getting one of the new iMac's myself, but I wanna wait until they are going a little faster than 1.25ghz G4's. 20in screen sure is sweet though.

Hum,
yep, there`s also a power-on/off button on the back of the base. Pressing it while the machine is off will turn it on; pressing it while asleep will wake the machine to ask if you want to restart or shut down; pressing it while active will cause the machine to ask if you want to restart or shut down. [hum, Appels cunning plan to hide the fact that their OS is rubbish?] [And once you do switch it on, do you dare switch it off?]

I hate software switches. I had a 200 Mhz Mac that required me to pull the plug occasionally to turn it off because holding the power button wouldn't work. ATX drives me nuts, too.
Get a power strip. They rock, usually come with a built-in USB hub, and will lift the monitor enough to actually be readable. :-) |

Every time I hear about MacOS X I think back to the time, a few years ago, when AmigaOS 4 was supposed to have been some custom stuff on top of a Linux kernel. It would have been interesting to compare MacOS and AmigaOS then, both the same idea (custom GUI on top of a free unix clone) but different ways to get there.
Then there's the question: did Apple get the idea from the public discussions there were going on at the time in Amiga forums? (could be: according to slashdot, this stuff was being discussed in 1999, and MacOS X first appeared in 2001, according to this history page. Plenty of time to port BSD and cook up the new GUI) |

Switching to unix was the smartest OS move they ever made. Credit to them for actually making OSX keep the Mac look and feel whilst removing the inadequacies of the inner workings :-)

@Karlos
I totally agree. The original MacOS absolutely dumbfounded me with the way it operated internally for a lot of things... Tried programming MacOS 7 & 8 versions. Not entirely pleasurable, and requiring users to set the memory to be used by an app when it is supposed to be user/beginner OS friendly absolutely confounds me, although I can see how the older architecture caused this to happen. MacOS X is seriously tempting me, though... It is seriously nice to use... but will stick with Amiga for the mo. Apologies for being a bit off-topic. I have no idea how to get the new Macs to switch on/off. |

This reminfda we of a few years back, We were working in a Recording Studio in West london... a real trendy area... Notting Hill, ladbrook grove etc... blah...
Anyway the engineer was ill on the first day sowe were pretty much on our own... So the first task of the day to to get the equipment started up... "Let Matt do it, he's good with stuff like that" was the battle cry of all involved... so, I wen't around switching things on, chechin everything wasworking (they even had a Sountrax 6800 C64 based Mixing console, that was serious fun!)... then came to switching on the iMacs... The G4 was no problem a big round power button on the case, I know where I was, I felt happy.. but the "pot plant" one was a totally confusing... I spent maybe an hour trying to get the thing on... I did do it eventually, but I can't remember how...
