Yes, lotsa rumours out there, but links sound all confused.
Anyone know/tried this beast yet? Might be a way out of the Amithlon dilemma. Hope it flies! (PS, AF 5.0 can surely tax a Winx86 box with a good game going , heats the heck out of my AMD 2600+ CPU diode to 60C!) :-o

This is the link referenced in the ANN thread.
And yes, given the difficulty in acquring a legal copy of Amithlon, this could be the solution. Has anyone tried this yet? If the Knoppix booter is HD installable, I'm sold. Lotsa great products hitting the market lately! |

That laptop should be fine. I've had a much slower system run UAE, but that was a long time ago. I'm not to sure of the latest version included with Amiga Forever.

My copy hasn't arrived yet, but from all the available info it's just UAE on Linux, even if it is a "live" Linux distro.
This has good points and bad ones. The good points are compatibility with anything supported through Linux, the bad ones are incompatibility of AmigaOS side drivers which cannot be used, unlike Amithlon. Native x86 code for Amiga apps will also not work. So, in the absence of Amithlon/Umilator or any follow-up, AF 6.0 is as good as it gets, but it ain't a replacement. It's not the "new generation" Amithlon or anything like that. There's the ANN thread here, with a few comments from Bernie on the differences between the two.

Actually, what Cloanto should have done, because there is a need for it, is to integrate a development environment (gcc, AmigaOS SDK, SDL etc) as a pre-configured option.

KNOPPIX is a "live" Linux distro this means everything is done in RAM. KNOPPIX it's self is AMAZING it manages to fit about 5 gig of stuff on a single CD (done with some impresive compression) so a version of UAE (or what ever) built on this would not touch your hard disks... I myself use KNOPPIX as a Fix disk when my version of mandrake goes arse over...

I got my copy. I have had some mixed results. The window install crashes. The live CD boots just fine. They say that the Live version is installable onto HD but no directions can be found. Also, the default look is not so good. Yes it looks like the standard 3.9 install. Grey, blockly, ugly. I know it is just "eye candy" but I really wish they had inculded some of the stuff that makes Amgia OS look nice and a nice default look would be great. The MUI version that comes with it is the sharware version so it will cost you another $25 to improve the look. I will say that the responsiveness of the Live CD is pretty good. Should be even better when install to HD. In one part of their home page jokes about leaving the CD in your friends computer for when they boot it up. I wouldn't do that, the default look is just too ugly, I don't want my friends to think that Amiga OS looks that bad and that old.

Installed it two days after its release (bought if on AmiGbg). And it's very nice. Installed on the laptop without any glitches. And it boots directly off the CD should you want to, without touching the host OS at all.
I'm not the one to ask about technical specs though -- I still have a real Amiga so this more of a curiosity for me. There are a few games included which plays well. You can also update UAE automatically from the net now, which is good. For the real fans there are (digitally enhanced) videos included, among them the original launch party of the Amiga by Commodore. Man, it was big! that actually gave me the shivers! Deathbed Vigil of course, as well as some taped speeches by Jay Miner. A strange but cool feature is the "realistic" AmigaOS1.3 feel, where you hear the click and whirr of the diskdrive as games load. I must be pathetc, but that sound sure brought back memories. So for me AmigaForever6 is perhaps not a replacement for my A4000/060, but it's a good buy nevertheless. Lot of work, enthusiasm and love has gone into making the product ready for a new version release despite others in the company thinking the creators are just plain nuts. And thats worth supporting, if nothing else. . SlimJim |
