CF card in internal hd enclosure trouble
« on: March 25, 2017, 05:12:33 PM »
I've removed the dust again on my amiga after 10 years of storage.
I'v bought to cf card adapters from Amigastore.eu and done the recap.
As a final touch I thougt I should drop the second adapter in a hd caddie/enclosure for easy removal if I want to copy files from my pc. Similar type as the one in the link:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Mobile-Rack-Removeable-Frame-for-2-5-3-5-HDD-ZIP-MO-ATA66-With-Fan/302249691092?_trksid=p2047675.c100005.m1851&_trkparms=aid%3D222007%26algo%3DSIC.MBE%26ao%3D2%26asc%3D20131003132420%26meid%3Df3f3ff2322a54c96941216bacd553d2f%26pid%3D100005%26rk%3D4%26rkt%3D6%26sd%3D171015314342

But for some strange reason my amiga will not boot properly with the second card in a caddy. It gives read error during boot.
Both cards are on seperate channels on my powerflyer/fastATA board.

Why doesnt it work?

The only thing I can think of is that the caddys I've tried have a internal 80wire/ata66 ide cable. But that should matter, should it?
I've tried enclosures from two different vendors. Both fail.

Any thoughts?

Post a screenshot or photo of the error message?  ;)

Try swapping CF cards to make sure problem is with the enclosure and not with one of the cards.

Sometimes a connector with 80 pin PATA is really just 40 pins, extra ground pins are not really connected to ground anyway. Sometims the enclosure only works with 80 pin PATA, but this is rare. Such devices will never work on 40 pin PATA. Check with the seller.

Also, can be issue with OS, what version of Workbench and Kickstart? If 3.1 Workbench, never upgraded, then could just be using 8GB card or 4 GB boot partition.

Finally, what software device are you using on PowerFlyer/FastATA? Is it recent or from 10 years ago? That is worth checking, might need updating.

Picture of error and how the cf adapter is in the caddy.

Tried swapping cf adapters. It's  the same. Also noticed that these adapters cant be on the same channel as master slave.
Kickstart is 3.1, os is 3.9. Drivers from elbox is afaik the latest recommended, but last updated 2006'ish. Trouble is that the error comes before anything is loaded as you can se from the screenshot.

When cf-adapter is connected directly to the controller all is ok.

That's an FFS error. At least it is seeing the CF card, so that is good news. Are you sure this isn't a 4 GB issue or something? What OS are you using?  scsi.device, fastfilesystem version etc. ? If the Power Flyer is like my FastATA then it can run in split mode or non-split mode - how are you running it with this device?

Those hdd caddys (in general) are somewhat cumbersome to get to work in a pc...
I've had my share of struggle with them.
Some of them works great... in the beginning... but then wear an tear starts to provoke sudden and strange error messages. And sometimes entire data transfers are just, magically "poof" gone..

The caddies I still have left are probably going to end up as targets some day....

When you mention it... They are old. Could be bad connection between the frame and the caddie.
I guess I'll probably just whip out my dremel and build a frame or something for the adapters that fits in the same space.
