So you sent him £500 outside of ebay through PayPal?

Edit: You say cash? How did you get the cash to him?

He's a criminal. You need to find out his name and address. Then what you do next is in your hands...

Ebay can't refund you but you can certainly report it to ebay and the police if you have correspondence regarding the agreed sale. It's worth a try, $500 is no joke.
If that doesn't bare fruit then you'll have to put your thinking cap on and figure out how to get some money/satisfaction back from this situation.

That happened twice to me on Amibay; I'm out $700 USD because of these people.

@AAACHIPSET: please in which country he is?

@danbeaver: $700 USD, wow! Incredible, I thought that on AMIBAY, the risk of being robbed were very low :(

Sorry to hear about this. I hope someone catches up to this guy one day.

Something I've seen in the distant past was for a thief to hijack someone else's account then rob as many as possible before disappearing. Ebay may shut down that account, but the thief says "so what", and moves on. I don't know if this is still a problem on ebay, but just one of the many reasons I quit using them years ago.

One thing I always used for larger transactions was cash-on-delivery. Buyer and seller are both then covered by the shipping agent. One gets the item when they pay the shipper, and the other gets paid. If the other party didn't agree to COD then I would avoid the deal.

COD is safer for sure, but usually not an option for payment.  I guess the general rule of thumb is never to pay someone outside of the auction/sale site, privately.  Stick within ebay/paypal then you will have some protection.

Sorry to hear that.

At this day and age NEVER EVER PAY Direct deposit or Money Orders on items on EBAY especially as a side deal! You need at least Paypal protection.
Good faith does not work on EBAY.
Do you still have the ebay link and username?

Maybe you can try to trace back the phone # and payment at the receiving end and see who that person is, maybe file a police report.

Last year there was a A4000T scam going on on Ebay. Buy it Now for $2000 and payment outside of Ebay payment system, so beware.

Right,  not an option on things like paypal only deals. But if they are willing to take a personal payment of some kind (money order, check...) but balk at COD option then that's a red flag for me.

Huh, I thought COD had gone away in the '90s.  Looks like some shippers still offer it.  Nice!  :)
