Freescale semiconductor, 20 people dead

The producer of chips like the m68k series may be affected by this:

CNN: No sign of Malaysia Airline wreckage; questions over stolen passports

Quote from: CNN
Twenty of the passengers aboard the flight work with Freescale Semiconductor, a company based in Austin, Texas. The company said that 12 of the employees are from Malaysia and eight are from China.

These people would have little to do with the 68k chips... They've all been discontinued:

-edit- here is a bit more about the old 68k fab: http://www.electronicsweekly.com/news/business/freescale-not-to-reopen-sendai-fab-after-japan-quake-2011-04/

Poor maintaince, sabotage, bad pilots, bad construction etc. I think it's too early to even hint at any cause. Most likely the oil strips will provide a location clue that can be followed up with sonar and radio localization. The black boxes sends a beacon signal for one month (asfair). But that will be tough to find in conductive seawater.

Once the black boxes (loggers) are found. It will likely provide clues to a new level.

Accidents happen and assigning blame does not cancel out the sad news of lives lost and the impact that it has on their loved ones; just because their work has no direct link to one's own work or hobbies is not a reason to minimize to their deaths.

It's natural to reason that it was incompetence or sinister.  otherwise it's too difficult to reconcile. "They" say the interrelational impact of an accident is ten fold. That's a lot of family, friends and work colleagues impacted.
Terrible sad news. If all are lost.
