Why has the Amiga community been so quiet on the development of the platform?
I would've thought that there would have been more on their websites and more activity in general. Is there a particular reason for this? I would love to buy an AmigaOne, but it is hard to find out where it is in development and what I should expect from the product once everything is available? I 'm an old Amiga user (since 1986) and care about it's development and support. I occasionally visit the websites for all 3 companies and haven't seen many changes... |

The problem is that there are many users like you (and I) that are in the same situation, we are waiting for the release of OS4 before even considering the purchase of a new A1 system (or equivelent).
So, in short, you and I are the problem. The developers will not invest heavily in the development of new equipment and software until they can see a viable market for their product, to enable them to sell at a realistic price they must achieve large economies of scale in production. The problem with this, for us (potential) users, is that this creates the vicious circle argument. We will not buy systems until there is a decent amount of software and the developers will not develop until we have bought enough of the machines. We cannot blame the developers for at the end of the day, they are only trying to make a profit to appease their shareholders, and would be very foolish if they did not at least try to do this. The Amiga is not, and never will be the kind of market as the PC, where if developers ignore it, they virtually seal their commercial fate - as we are a niche market we need to convince them that the Amiga is a viable platform. But due to the machines history, which is as much a negative point as a positive one, due to the high levels of piracy, means we need to educate the developers that the market has changed considerably since the days of old when piracy was rife. But as we all know, first impressions once made are difficult to change. So, overall, you and I are the problem. If we invest in the machines we will solve the future problem buy giving the developers a decent market for their products, but if we don't then the Amiga will become even more of a niche machine. :-( |

All three websites, Amiga Inc's, Hyperion's, and Eyetech's, haven't been updated in ages now. Considering the release of OS4 is "imminent", why the silence?

@matt3k
The lack of information on the official websites is disconcerting. That reminds me, I need to update the pegasos website.

I had an idea about this whole thing once, so here's a good place to put it. :-)
If Hyperion is doing OS4, and Eyetech is doing A1, what does it matter that Amiga is in the state that it is in now (no offices, etc.)? Amiga hasn't really anything to do at the moment but wait around. So, to keep on topic... Amiga is silent because it doesn't really have anything to say. Amiga might not be doing anything (as far as I know), but things are being done (as far as I know :-)). |

Maybe sources for small quantities of G3 & G4 processors is drying up. If M$ is ordering a crap load of G5's for the next X-Box then production lines may have shifted.
Sorry, but its not the first time Tech coming to the market wasn't under cutted by rivals, thus delaying, postponing and or killing any future competition. Sorry, not trying to be negative, but obviously succeeding anyway. :-o

Could be they are waiting til the have a completed saleable solution or things are changeing so fast that it would be insane to keep a website up to date.
The REAL answer: Who knows. We'll know when we know. Try searching the news sites for up coming and past show reports, screen shots, interviews. There were just some screen shot release not too long ago. Best bet check the Amiga news sites, that's where the news is. |
