Delfina Lite vs AD516 for mp3 playback
« on: March 17, 2013, 11:53:46 PM »
I'm trying to decide which soundcard I should buy for mp3 playback.

I have a 040@40mhz in an a3000.

What would be the best solution?  They both have DSP's, would they both alleviate the cpu in a similar fashion?

Thanks!

At least I can confirm that it works with Delfina with this :

http://aminet.net/package/mus/play/dmdev

I would say that there will be some problems, but they are solvable. Mostly because Delfina is still supported and there is losts of about it over internet.

Most of those problems are solved with this :

http://aminet.net/package/util/misc/DelfInit

I haven't need to overclock delfina ever because of mp3

http://aminet.net/package/driver/audio/DelfTweak
ACube Sam 440ep Flex 800mhz, 1gb ram and 240gb hd and OS4.1FE

If you are just looking at playing MP3s, a MAS Player works great.
While not a soundcard per se, works great for playing MP3s with very little overhead.

Amiga 500 w/ 2M CHIP and 8M FAST RAM, DCTV, AEHD floppy, and 1084S.
Amiga 1000 w/ 4M FAST RAM, DUAL CF hard drives, external floppy.

Thanks for the idea, want to fill a zorro slot with this endeavor.  The MAS is great bang for the buck!

There's no decoding driver for the AD516. So while it has a DSP, no one's written the software to take advantage of it for playing MP3s.

Thanks for the info Matt,

I thought the AHI driver did that.  This is good to know!

Do you have a delfina?  How stable is it?

AHI doesn't do that, you need delfinampeg.device to do that, wich is first link in this thread. It need to be configured to program that you use to play mp3.

It is stable, with little tinkering. It was long time ago, when I setupped my Delfina, so if I remember coorectly, best solution is use third party software to init delfina to system, wich is Delfinainit, second link in this thread.

The Delfina is great for playing MP3, plus you get the bonus of having a great soundcard, which the MAS player wont' give you.

I play 192kbs MP3 on my Delfina flipper with no problems, though I did find that having a blizzard SCSI with 128 megs, failed when I tried to boot my A1200 witht the Delfina connected to the clock port. I never found out why, was the same of 2 different A1200 Mobos in a Tower.

Thanks for the great info.  I will get the Delfina.  Perhaps, I'll try MP2's to see if the lesser compression will result in better performance.

It will result in better performance, but also crappier quality

Delfina plays even higher bitrate mp3:s just fine, so I don't see why you'd need any trickery with mp2:s or so...

I would have thought with less compression the quality would have been better?

What is the highest rate that you have seen it run without crashing?  192 from what I have read seems be the max.

I didn't have that much problems with any mp3 file I gave to it. Occasional crashes with Amplifier in long plays (like in whole day playing), but can't connect it to any certain mp3 bitrated file. I think it was because something else, because delfmpeg for example was very stable. I can't say any facts about bitrates now, but for sure there were VBR files with higher average than 192 and pretty sure some 256 too...

I have overclocked Delfina Lite and patched library. In original setup it couldn't cope higher bitrate, but you can overclock even with software nowadays so that shouldn't be much problem.

You really only should consider using mp2 if you have a 030. 040, 060 or delfina, use mp3.
