Who wants to make some games?!
« on: November 12, 2012, 09:14:38 AM »
Here's one I'm working on:

You can test it out if you want, it's only one incomplete level at the moment but it's playable: http://home.exetel.com.au/~amiga/BackboneGame.lha

I'm using Backbone, so with a little help we could get the whole game made in a week or two. Does anyone else want to help, or make their own games?

That looks brilliant :)

I would love to start making games, i have AMOS Pro installed but need a beginners course in it and would not know where to start with backbone as it always crashes on me :(

So what sort of Amiga does Backbone need? Can I develop it on a humble a500?

Or should I look at WinUAE?

How about something a little easier to start with? Backbone was made in Amos, but it takes all the hard work out of making the games so you can get straight into designing levels, characters, stories and challenges!

Here's a review of Backbone that Rebel wrote a few years ago, it describes how you can use Backbone to make different kinds of games: http://www.amiga.org/forums/showpost.php?p=396250&postcount=1

Here's a screenshot of the program running with as many of its windows open as I could fit on screen. Don't be put off by how confusing it looks, you generally only have two or three windows open at a time: http://www.amiga.org/gallery/images/5087/1_Backbone.png

With Backbone you can create platformers and run & guns like Ruff & Tumble or Superfrog, as well as overhead shooters like Alien Breed or The Chaos Engine.

You can download Backbone for free from Aminet here:

 http://aminet.net/package/dev/misc/Backbone_Full
 http://aminet.net/package/dev/misc/Backbone_Upd
 http://aminet.net/package/dev/misc/Backbone_Key

Extract the Full archive and install it first, then extract the Update and install them over the top of the files from the Full archive, then extract the Key and copy it to the Backbone drawer. Now you have a fully working and registered copy of Backbone installed, and you can make games with ease!

Backbone needs an Amiga with Workbench 3.x installed, and benefits from faster CPUs. I wouldn't recommend trying to run it on an A500 unless it's upgraded. Games made in Backbone can run from a CD on a CD32 though, so you can publish your own CD32 games at least!

Thanks Cammy, will have to be on a WinUAE box and probably test the game on the A500 for real world environment.

Would be amazing to make a game like ruff'n'tumble. Love that game :-)

I have posted that on eab too. I think Hollywood would be great for creating games and I would like to start developing some kind of game creation environment. Example could be something like ZacMcKracken or Action/JumpAndRun. What do you think?

If anyone would like to put together their own game, either using Backbone, Hollywood or even coding it, they are welcome to use these graphics as long as the game is an Amiga game and not for profit:

If anyone would like to expand the block set or add more items or enemies, please feel free to upload your work so we can all benefit from it!

Looks snazzy, I'll have to give it a shot.

I really need to start focusing on my own game projects...

Hey Cammy!  Looks good and I'm glad to hear you are still feeding the creation bug.

Man I wish I could jump into that right now and help you out, but life keeps getting in the way. :(

Good Luck and maybe some day I'll get my game ideas running (crosses fingers).

Nice work Cammy! No sound yet eh? Very nice though, I think the graphics are particularly good.
I couldn't get the gold nugget that was really high in the sky (to the left of the ladder and up). My head hits the roof...suppose the sky really is the limit!;)
Can you make the screen pan down as he crouches down? I say this because when I went into the mine I had to step off of a platform but had no idea where I was going to fall or what was down there (luckily not lava knowing my luck).
Only tested on WINUAE ECS emulation at the minute. I'm glad to see backbone doesn't require AGA though. Nice to run new games on A500/600 etc. I don't know what help I could possibly be though. I could play test a bit, and make suggestions etc. I wish I had time to play around with this stuff.

Does anyone on here remember the "Reality" games creation suite? That was also programmed in AMOS. I think it came on 7 floppys or thereabouts. I have mine kicking around somewhere.

Backbone is a bit limited, we can't have "look up" and "look down" unfortunately, so I'll just try to redesign everything to be more viewable, and I'm thinking of changing the parts that are too hard to jump to.

Does anyone else want to make games with Backbone? It's very easy!
