I am wondering. Whats the difference between kickstart rom 3.0 and 3.1 ?
I am reading on amigakit that 3.1 is essential for wb 3.1, but I have rom 3.0 on my 1200 and load wb 3.1. Why is that, if its essential ? Also, what is the difference between wb 3.1 and 3.9 ? Can 3.9 run on 1200 or does it require later machines? Cheers! |

I ran 3.1 workbench with a 3.0 ROM for a while, nd it was fine. Someone can probably point out exact differences. some hardware may take the 3.1 ROM's.
3.9 includes a lot of patches, extra software and other bits. It takes extra RAM and I believe at least an 020.

Main difference is the support for CD-Roms in the software and as runequester stated above you need this for 3.9. But you can always softpatch the kickstart using things like relokick, quiet useful also for downgrading Kickstart in a non hardware, reversible way by loading it into resident memory which does not get erased by a softreset.

Yeah,
As I understand it, it's mostly bugfixes (like the cardresource.library that disables PCMCIA if you have more than 4M in the 68k RAM space.) Most people run WB 3.1 fine with 3.0 ROMs. Not saying you couldn't run into issues, but I haven't heard of any and didn't run into any when I was doing that.. desiv

Okay, thanks everyone, that explains a bit..
By the way, regarding 020 This only upgrades the memory right? Been looking at accelerators on amigakit, and correct me if I am mistaking but 020 card runs at 16mhz it says, and this is the same speed as 1200 runs on? And if I would upgrade, where can I get a hold of wb 3.9 to try it out? Can it/does it have to be bought? Or can it leagly be downloaded today? |

The specific card amigakit sells.... yes. It mostly just gives you more RAM. You can get 020 processors at higher speeds, but 030's are more common to find. For 3.9, you do have to buy it, unless you resort to a torrent. Not sure if it's available from any retailer or if you have to go second hand.

I would also add that the soft reset is longer with WB3.1 than with WB3.0

It comes up from time to time on e-bay or other sites.. I have to admit tho, I keep passing. I'm curious, but not at the prices I've seen. ClassicWB with 3.1 is really nice. If 3.9 was still available for say $30, I'd snap one up in a heartbeat. (Even tho the torrent is pretty easy to find) desiv

yeah, Id go for ClassicWB over 3.9 as well. Just more fully featured and much less trouble.

That's a "feature" added to 3.1.
Since there are so many ways to softkick (my ACA1230 softkicks to 3.1 and I never even notice it) nowadays, I'm not sure the need for a 3.1 ROM. Now, a custom burned ROM might be nice... When I get some time, I'll play with 3.5 and even 3.9... Just that 3.1 with some addons (ClassicWB and I added a DOCK app) is just so darn nice.. ;-) desiv

I remember being able to buy my copy KS and WB 3.1 directly from Villagetronic during the bankruptcy days (still have it) because I own of their Picasso II video cards. I don't remember the exact reasons, but perhaps graphics cards and the RTG system had something to do with the updates from 3.0 to 3.1 and Villagetronic being able to sell KS/WB 3.1 for a while?

To the best of my knowledge there is little difference between 3.0 and 3.1; but there is a huge difference between 3.9 (plus Boing Bags 2 / 4) and OS 3.1; A good reason for KS 3.0 is faster booting. OS 3.9 adds a lot of support for non-gaming stuff. If all you use Amy for is games, then don't bother with OS 3.5/3.9, nor the excellent 4.1 (PPC required); but if your Amy has a B/CSPPC you should get OS 4.1, a very modern yet still very Amiga operating system. Also in my opinion, if you have an 040 or 060, then you should be running OS 3.9.
I wish the copyright owners of still useful software would get off their anal orifice and let it either go public domain, or let someone sell it again. It is absurd for us to have to "steal" software when we are willing to pay for it! |

Some boards extra RAM are not recognized with 3.0 ROMs, but are with 3.1 ROMs (my 1230 XA by Microbiotics for one). If you have 3.0 you had to add a program to your startup seq. that would reboot the 1200. The 3.1 had no problems with this.
