SCE Liverpool (Pysgnosis) are no more...
« on: August 22, 2012, 05:12:51 PM »
Sad news today; the developers from the company originally known as Psygnosis have been made redundant.

http://arstechnica.com/gaming/2012/08/wipeout-developer-studio-liverpool-closed-after-28-year-run/

Responsible for creating and publishing some amazing Amiga games (Lemmings, Shadow of the Beast series) and some not so great games (Microcosm - nice FMV, but where was the gameplay?!!).

End of another era...

Today, Sony shut down Psygnosis
« Reply #1 on: August 22, 2012, 08:13:32 PM »
Today, Sony shut down legendary studio Psygnosis (more recently known as SCE Studio Liverpool), marking an end to its 28-year run.

Been a while since they made any Amiga games, true, but the studio's passing seems worth a mention here.

Some faves of mine from Psygnosis:

Shadow of the Beast
Brataccas
Ballistix
Killing Game Show
Blood Money
Menace
Infestation
Awesome
Barbarian
Wipeout

Sad indeed, ive always liked Psygnosis, so much that my first Windows 3.x PC had the classic Psygnosis picture as background, since then funny enough ive used that picture on all windows and Linux machines trough the years because I like the look of it a lot, even now on my main WS i have that picture.

EDIT: Now and then ive used Digital illusions as backgrounds also.

Really bad news, but this means no more wipeouts in future (at least from the same studio).

That's certainly bummer news to hear. Indeed Psygnosis is the No.1 game developer I think of when I think of Amiga.

That's probably a good thing. The latest version is crap on the PS3. I think wipeout was only ever intended to show off someones PS1.

Sad news but as soon as they became part of Sony it was inevitable this would happen one day.

I do miss the days when there were 100's of different developers.

Gaming is so sterile and dull now.

When I first saw, and more importantly, heard Shadow of the Beast, I knew I had to have an Amiga.

The funny thing is, I probably would have bought every PC Wipeout sequel since the one I bought in 1997 (Wipeout 2097 - which annoyingly was poorly designed so that if you ran it on much faster hardware than a Pentium 200MHz, the zillion frames per second would translate through to zillions more MPH :) ), as I'm sure would a lot of other Wipeout fans.  Instead I have Wipeout 64 for my N64 which isn't half bad.

Same goes for the Street Fighter 2 series.  Companies that think that they're adding value to their own platform are deluded enough to think that people like me will buy a console for like 2 computer games when I've already spent a fair bit in turning my PC into a gaming rig.
