Default 68040 accelerator

I have the chance to purchase an Apollo 68040 accelerator for my a1200, seller mentions there are no drivers or Floppy Disks with it...can anyone tell me whether this accelerator board is recognised by the system without drivers? Is it compatible with every a1200 mobo revision or picky?

I'd rather not purchase if it is to cause me hassle.

Cheers

You should be fine with the standard 040 Library, but if not one of us can hook you up with the latest.

Drivers shouldnt be necessary for the 1240, but the apollo cards are picky about mobo rev.
The 040 also gets hot.
But if you can get it at a good price, then go for it.

I have 2 A1200's.

A Desktop Dynamites pack and also Amiga Technologies A1200

I dont know what mobo revision is in either one? I won't be busting the warranty seal on the AT one as it's never been opened.

No drivers specifically, but you will at least need the standard 68040.library. Not all of my OS disksets seemed to include this.

You should also consder RemApollo, as at least one of my older Apollo 68040 boards doesn't remap various resources from Chip RAM which can seriously hamper performance.

Apollos are nice boards, but Amiga technologies A1200 wount't work without timing fixes

http://www.ianstedman.co.uk/Amiga/am..._mobo_fix.html

I've also 2 A1200 computers, rev 1d4 and 2b, both works with timing fixed made. Without them only 1d4 worked and only with 3.0 roms.

You should open your amigas and check revisions, also you might want to add bigger harddrive.

040/060 accelerators works without drivers, problem is FPU wich doesn,t work without correct libraries.

Apollos has also faster (unstandard) chip ram access wich means that many games and demos works much faster with 040/060 apollos than any other accelerators. That is nice feature because A1200 is old and thats why quite underpowered computer, so every frame more per second is important.

I don't mind opening my Desktop Dynamites a1200 but do not wish to open the AT a1200 to keep it's untouched originality.

What revision mobo a1200 do the Desktop Dynamites generally have?

It should work with the Commodore library, but I suggest using the one from the MuLib package (AmiNet).

My Escom 1D4 board came new with the fixes already done, so you might get lucky. If the card works with your motherboard, they're fast and reliable, and some can be upgraded to '060.

The AT a1200 unit I have, has a sale date of 1997 suppose it's worth a dabble, if it doesn't work out for me, what can I get in resale value from Apollo 040 with 32mb ram?

Amikit has a repar service wich can do timing fixes? It shouldn't cost much.

You may consider upgrading from the original power supply. they are weak and the 040 may tax it. Your mileage may vary. Most people use the A500 power supply which is better.
