Default Going amiga-amish for a bit

Looks like RAM went bad in my PC. I don't have the funds to replace that until I get paid again, so it looks like I will be amiga only for a little bit.

Ever been in a similar situation?

no. PC here can be bought used (but with guarantee) for low prices. So cheap to replace (if you do not need a new one). Or buy it on ebay.

Besides:
I have one Notebook and a desktop in office and two Notebooks at home.

Yes. I have taken a few enforced Amiga only holidays from my laptop. It was quite refreshing but I wouldn't want to do it for longer than two weeks.

well, it's a week and a half until I get paid again,so I think it'll be pretty fun for a survival trip. I had done a similar experiment a ways back, but only got around to the preparation stage, so I guess we'll see how it goes

My only computer was an A1200 until 2004/2005, without intarwebz, does that count?

Shouldn't be too bad, runey. I've enforced some cli-only builds of Arch on my computers. Surfing with links and using mutt for a week - and that's definitely worse than Amiga even if there's a 3ghz monster pushing it.

okay that's pretty hardcore for both of you

Ibrowse does okay for forum stuff, and a bit of a detox from wasting time on the internet might be good (though I might end up wasting that time playing Chaos Engine instead..)

PowerBook with MorphOS is not an Amiga precisely, but can be considered a similar situation IMHO. Then in my case this situation is permanent. I have a PC only at work and turn it on only if I have no other choice (happens a few times a month).

Heh, if you lived near by I'd give you one of my spare PC's. I never have that problem, though I have had to go without my Amiga for a while. That sucked!

Oh wow. So MOS is your main OS then?

Care to tell us more about your experiences?

I used an A1200 with 060, Mediator etc until around 2004 when my AmigaONE XE took over. I did set up a Windows PC sometime around 2007/8 out of necessity. I tend to use both OS4 and XP in about equal measures. When there's a browser that will play youtube visds at an acceptable speed I'll turn the PC on less often.

edit.

I don't think I'd want to use an original Amiga for browsing the web these days no matter what the specification these days. I'm glad OS4 came along when it did.

Back in the 90's I was stuck in a similar situation for a couple of months - used my plain vanilla A1200 with 20 MB HD for word processing in the only software package that was capable of typing in Czech and output in formats and encodings compatible with PC software. It was OK but no match for the MS Word (for MS-DOS) on a PC.

Well, if it's cheaper than the RAM there probably isn't much reason to even consider it IMHO. (^__~ )

Before my eMac died, I was VERY VERY happy with my MorphOS experience. Even though I had about the crappiest hardware to run it on, I was able to do a great number of things out of the box, especially where classic apps were concerned.

It is totally worth the while and worth taking the time to explore. Though I've grown to love AROS, I can still say that MorphOS goes so much deeper and has a plethora of practical every day uses.

Yup. Since my XP laptop is gone missing I have got my MorphOS machines only. I am using Mac Mini and my gf is using PowerBook. Have been 4 months without XP now.

Sometimes I have to take work laptop to home when I am on-call.
