I wonder what it all sounds like in Klingonese. I will just throw it through the good old English to Klingon translator...
Disappointingly 68000 translates as 68000 But interestingly Amiga translates as 'IH be'. This is Klingon for beautiful woman

I have a question. How do people say Linux and Ubuntu?
I say Linux as "Linn-ex". Some people say "Line-ex". I've also heard "Line-ous". And i say Ubuntu as "You-bun-too". But others say "Ooo-boon-too". What about everyone else?

During a conversation about amiga accelerators I would use oh twenty, oh thirty, oh forty, oh sixty etc. If that would lead to ambiguity then I would say sixty eight thousand and thirty etc. For the 68000 I would always say sixty eight thousand. The 68010 would probably always be sixty eight thousand and ten, but it's largely irrelevant. I used to pronounce linux the way americans would (line-uks), however linus pronounces it differently. http://www.kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel/SillySounds/ ubuntu is supposed to be oo-boon-too, but it seems to be pronounced oo-bun-too around here. I can't remember using it in conversation, but I'd probably use the latter. btw I'm british. Last edited by psxphill; 01-21-2012 at 02:29 AM.. |

Yes, the "i" in Linux is a short "ee" sound as in "In" in northern Europe, it is not pronounced like "aye" as in "Line".

You all suck!
You should say "MILITARY GRADE" in front of what you say. Sheesh! Didn't Doomy teach you anything! :-) -P

Northern Europe? English phonetics is fubar, the French is different but at least consistant, the rest of us pronounce Linux perfectly well by default.

How does he pronounce his name then?
I say Linux the same way he does, but I would pronounce his name like the peanuts character. |

I pronounce it like six-eighty-thirty, six-eighty-sixty...and 68000 being 68k, with the arch as m68k. I know, it's not even consistent.
I had a boss back when Ubuntu was just getting some name recognition, and he couldn't remember what it was called. It came up in conversation and he referred to it as "Ubi Dubi." Since then that is what I call it :-) Interesting that everyone knows what I'm talking about even if they've not heard it before. |
