Wb 3.1 LoadWB freeze
« on: January 10, 2012, 01:03:49 PM »
Let me start from the beginning :-) :

I was installing BetterWB to a newly installed barebones WB 3.1 partition. I was doing this in my main patced up WB3.1 environment. But BetterWB installed right onto this patched up WB 3.1 replacing several files and S-S etc. :/ but I had made a backup just before trying this just in-case :-). So I formatted the partition and then copied all the files back. Before this I decided to change the partition blocksize from 1024 to 512. All seemed cosher, empty partition, copied back the files and then booted.

BUT, now the boot process fails when WB tries to load the desktop view. It displays my backdrop pic and some partition & left-out icons, but then freezes. I never get to see the WB 3.1 disk icon. Mouse moves but nothing else happens. I didn't change a thing in S-S or other. Tried disabling WBStartup, no help. With no S-S and then with just plain LoadWB it still freezes. Luckily my OS 3.9 partition loads up fine so I can try and solve the problem.

Any suggestions here?? I still have some ideas though...

Is there some issue with a library or DOS handler which was replaced with a "better" version, or patched some way which is now incompatible... What about the icon library? I don't know of any software whcih would have an issue with the blocksize, especially a barebones "LoadWB".

What about SetPatch? Did you restore that as it was as well?

BetterWB was installed accidentally on my "patched up" Wb 3.1 setup, not on the barebones 3.1 one. But I restored the patched up Wb-partition from my backup simply by copying it back, so nothing should have changed there. Everything should have been as if no BetterWB installation had ever been made.

Hmmm... That is very odd indeed. Any hardware changed since you made that backup? And it was a 100% backup of a working system? I know it's a pain, but I'd be tempted to change the blocksize back to 1024 to try it out. What filesystem are you using by the way?

I'm using PFS3 on all my partitions. Will try setting blocksize back (dunno why it should matter..) and doing a full format, now I just did a quickformat.
AND no hardware change in-between and the backup was made from a fully booting/working WB 3.1 partition.

You don't need to full format.  You wrote that you restored the backup and then rebooted. Did you wait a little while (at least three seconds) before you hit the reset keys? PFS3 has some kind of deferred write mechanism which only writes back the root block three seconds after the last access. This reduces the number of write operations to the root block but it also has the effect that changes are lost if you reset too early.

If it still freezes, you should boot without startup-sequence and run diskvalid and/or pfsdoctor on the partition.

OK formatted the partition again and changed block size back to 1024 (shouldn't matter with PFS3 anyway), then copied back all files. Then ran PFSDoctor and also Diskvalid, no errors found. Still the same. However...

I had set my PPC memory to fastest possible earlier in the ppc-bootmenu (just for speed tests), but I remember having set it back to 60ns. But the setting wasn't saved there, so I can only guess that this faster memory access has MAYBE corrupted some files during backup copying. Damn! Even setting it back to 60ns the freeze happens anyway...

But no worries, I finish my BetterWB installation and make that my main WB 3.1 partition :). I don't mind setting it all up again (WarpUP, Picasso96, Mediator etc.), tinkering is a major part of the Amiga fun! :hammer:

FYI it was task/process "Workbench" that was crashing.

could it be a problem with maxtransfer settings? Maybe the files are corrupted when copied back if maxtransfer is wrong?

I have the safe Maxtransfer setting of 0x1FE00 on all my partitions. My HD is connected to my BlizzPPC SCSI so it shouldn't care about that setting anyway I think. But better be safe than sorry.

EDIT: mask is set to 0x7FFFFFFE, should it be 0x7FFFFFFC?

This is kinda solved. I'm not touching the old WB 3.1 install anymore so good riddance to it! :)
