The US is killing its tourist trade by making everyone who enters it go through a huge amount of red tape and security. Fingerprinting for people entering? WTF!

i've had to get into Canada a few times and those custom nazi's are so used to the idea that american's carry contraban into theri precious country that they make everyone feel like criminals.

and, let me repeat what I have often said here before: I NEVER have taken drugs, not even legal ones. so, i get real pissed off when it's even infered that I do unethical things.

Careful what you wish for there Matt_H, If Dean gets elected, your taxes will get so high, you will need two more McJobs, just to pay the taxes on the first one.

Europe, Taiwan, Japan, and Canada will have to defend themselves from the bad guys of this world. Wow! Let them suck up that cost, like the US has been doing for the last 55 years!

Of course you might get cleaner air in the State Parks, but you won't get to see it, because you will not be able to buy the gas to get there.

If you're Scottish it's even worse. I saw on telly tonight that, as of October, if you need a new passport, you'll also need a visa. In the old days you could get a visa from the American consulate in Edinburgh. Not anymore. Now we have to go to England or Northern Ireland. :-(

Where to start with this....

Oh forget it, I could rant on and on about it, its not like I'm ever going to visit a country that demands that my own break its own laws in order to maintain transport routes...

Besides, watching the US become a police state will be interesting to watch, and no doubt the American Press will loudly broadcast what its doing to its own for "security" at every given oportunity giving us that much more insite into how a democratic "free" country slips into militarism and fear culture.

They say Canadian customs agents are some of the worst, often searching and harassing everyone (although I have somehow been spared). There's a web site about it somewhere, can't remember the URL though. I think they're ####s too - just on principle.

Are the biometric passports to be optional (in the sense that if you don't want to travel to places like the US, but want to travel elsewhere)?

And in what manner are they to be used? I have no real problem using fingerprints in the same way as a photograph (ie, your fingerprints are checked to see if you're the same person that the passport indicates). But given the US's behaviour, it sounds like we're going to see our fingerprints checked against list of suspects, and also end up in centralised databases of every country we visit.

I'd also like to know more on the false positive rate for their fingerprint checking. The media says "less than 0.1%", which is passed off as apparentely being good, but this is a useless figure - 0.1% is absurdly high.

Bearing in mind that we now have laws allowing suspects to be held without charge, I wouldn't like to be mistakingly matched with someone on their list.

Just in case anyone missed this, it seems that the US now get hold of Europeans' personal data including name, address, phone number, credit card numbers, travelling companions, and the amount of luggage checked in.

Let's hope that someone on their Terrorist and Drug Barons list didn't used to live in the place you just moved in to!
