I have OS3.9 on CD but I cannot get a cdrom drive working on my A1200.
Story in brief: I have an IDE cable which has a small connector for the internal 2.5" HDD and a connector for a normal IDE drive (3.5" hdd or cdrom drive). 3.5" hdd's and cdrom drives used to work fine set as slave but now for some unknown reason my A1200 refuses to work if i plug a cdrom or hdd. Anyway, if i cant get this problem fixed (i would love to fix it) I still want to install OS3.9. Is this possible and if so, how?

If you have the tools for the job you could install it to the harddrive using Winuae and then once the install is complete put the harddrive back into the Amiga.
Also You are probably going to get a few replies telling you how you shouldn't bother because 3.1 is better when you install a load of updates from aminet. |

As mentioned above, I would go the WinUAE route if possible and then transfer your drive over. Also, look at Bloodwych's ClassicWB installations. There is a OS3.9 one which has all of the instructions to get it going on WinUAE and then you can copy it to a hard drive for your Miggy (It's what I use on my A4000).

Are you running IDEFIX from Aminet when trying to mount the CDROM ?
Is the CDROM set as slave and HDD as master? Try the opposite if it doesn't work. You might get lucky.

CDROM is set as slave, but i also tried Master. The HD has no jumpers for Slave/Master.

Do you have any other Hard Drives you can test with? All of my 2.5" drives have pins to set Master/Slave.

You could make an iso and mount it under amiga os and then install from the iso. VirtualCD (on aminet) is a nice, simple, easy to use option here with gui, etc.
This of course though would require os3.x installed 1st. |

I'd partition the drive with the Amiga, then with WinUAE copy the whole CD from disk to a second partition, in a folder if you'd like. I believe copying the Emergency Disk folder's contents from the CD to a bootable partition on your 1200's hard drive will get it up and running and then you'd be able to run the install from the other partition.
Another trick, once you've gotten 3.9 up and running, if you want to run the boing bags they ask for the original 3.9 CD, you can get around that by simply assigning "AmigaOS3.9" to the folder you put the OS3.9 CDs contents in. It's been a couple of years, but I believe this is how I did it.

Sure, I've had to do this before...
...but then ended up going back to 3.1. I can not recall what all I changed exactly, but I remember using WinUAE to create an Emergency Disk, then I turned that into an ADF, transferred that to one of my Amigas, wrote it to floppy, removed the CD-ROM drivers, installed drivers for my PCMCIA CF card reader, copied OS 3.9 to my CF card, altered something or other in the Startup-Script so that the Emergency Disk would know to look on my CF card instead of a CD-ROM for OS 3.9, and that's that. DO NOT install OS 3.9 via WinUAE. Installing 3.1 via WinUAE is safe, but if you install OS 3.9, half your files will be write protected for no good reason. Especially all those config files.

There's a third mode called "Cable select" totaly incompatible with Master/Slave modes.

It's perfectly possbile to install OS 3.9 completely in WinUAE and then put the harddrive into the Amiga.
The only thing to take care of is to mount the CD as a CD in WinUAE and not as a Windows directory. The latter leads to write protected messages. The former is a bit more complicated. You need to make an emergency disk and then edit the CD driver on the emergency disk to mount the CD correctly. But even if the files are write protected it only needs one command to unprotect them: protect sys:#? +wd all |

Problem solved guys... I opened up the miggy and turned the IDE cable the other way and everything is fine now.
Thanks as always for your help

but, it might be possible to simply copy install files and then Assign to a directory (instead of CD). I think that works too, if there are no fancy protections.

I installed it using ftpmount once. You van also copy the files to a hd and install it from there. But you wont be able to install the boingbags without the audio tracks iirc.
The easiest way is probably with winuae. |
