Grunch: new package manager

Grunch is a multi OS application keeping downloading, installing, updating and uninstalling away from the user.

Sounds like some ordinary packet manager? Maybe, but Grunch is more. It's kind of a software center, where you can click and search for all the software you need. No more searching for the right OS version and the right download page, no more dealing with libraries and other files required to get the stuff to work.

Grunch is taking over.

Geit said he did compile an OS4-version, but has no way to test it himself (guess someone here at the Amiga-Meeting will play victiim later today).

AROS is rather unlikely as he doesn't use that too and would have to battle Zune-incompabilities.

And yes Crunch is, have been useing it heavily for the past 2 months.

So it's not open source I take it?

That would relieve him of the headache of compiling it for other platforms himself.

Grunch indeed seems to be a truly great piece of software, more than "just a packet manager", a bit unique in its kind!

Also part of the "Bad Bramstedt Bundle" is "Magic Beacon", which also seems to be a really useful piece of software that will enhance your MorphOS experience a lot!

Both these should really be incorporated as official parts of MorphOS IMHO! A call to the MorphOS Team - make it happen! :)

(And also part of the bundle is a small commodity called "WirelessDesktop", which allows you to use your iDevice (iPod, iPhone, iPad) as a wireless keyboard/mouse.)

It searched my hard drive and found 0 applications it recognized. Some of them are pretty mainstream commercial ones. Eg. DPaint, AmigaWriter, SAS/C, etc.

So what *does* it actually recognize? Is there a list somewhere?

Until it actually recognizes some apps it is useless I'm afraid.

How should it install old but still commercial SW ? Download them from some warez-sites ?

The point of Grunch is to keep you system uptodate, read it downloads free SW that is still commonly updated like libraries, MUI-classes etc.

When I start Grunch it comes up with a rather long list from ACE (CPC-EMU) to ZoomIt of which most aren't installed (and won't be anytime soon).

Don't know how long that list is on 68k (probraly much shorter) but the databas seems pretty straightforward and you can add your own in the User subdir.

All that is needed is a somewhat reliable source for the SW.

No, it didn't recognize any of the hundreds of freeware programs I have installed, either.

In fact looking at the list it only seems to know about 20 programs, consisting mostly of Guido's own releases and also some MUI crap. Making it utterly useless in its present form.

After the release of the package manager Grunch here comes its Wiki, where everyone can find and share Grunch items. The idea of ​​a "decentralized and independent version maintenance" should be further promoted. The platform is open to all systems, everyone is invited to participate, no relation to geit.de.
