Hi
« on: August 31, 2011, 03:35:03 PM »
Hi All

I am a relatively new Amiga user.   I never had one as a kid, or even a twenty something.. or thirty something.. but I do now!

About a year ago, I came across two A500s and a 1080 monitor (along with a bunch of other old machines).  Unfortunately, the monitor was not working, so I stashed it away along with the A500s.  Recently, I dug out the monitor, thinking I would try to fix it.  The case had a big crack in it, so I wasn't to hopeful.  After opening it up, I noticed two large cracks across the main circuit board (clearly, this thing was abused).  Well, I figured I'ld give it a go, and soldered jumpers across all the cracks.  Still nothing. Replaced the power supply caps... still nothing.  Oh well I thought.

Just then a local ad came up for someone selling a 1084S with an A2000HD.  It had a couple mice, a couple external drives, a GVP A2000-HC+8 controller, software, etc...  So I went for it.  Well, after I had agreed to purchase it, but before I actually picked it up, I was staring at the main board of the 1080, and notice one more really small crack that I missed.  I soldered a jumper across and Bingo!, the thing fired right up, and looks great! (except for the big crack in the case).  So, now I have two working monitors :).  (Though, the new 1084S may need some tweaking).

Though I am new to Amigas, I've had an interest in old computers for quite some time.  Over the years I have collected many old computers, but have gotten rid  of most of them, except the Commodores, which I kept.  Currently, I have  a VIC20, about 8 C64s (4 or so working), a C64C, an SX64, a Plus/4 and  now 3 Amigas.

I graduated from the University in 2000 with a degree in computer science, and work in the IT field.  Even after all this time, I still enjoy programming, and look forward to exploring the Amiga programming environment.

So, being pretty much an amiga noob, I have some questions for you long time users.  I look forward to being part of the community

Cheers!

Welcome 1001001!  My Amiga addition started back in 86' when I looked in a shop window and saw the Boing Ball bouncing back and forth on the screen.  I too love to tinker with electronics and have a passion for reviving the dead.  Just be careful with monitors and the like as they can be tricky and a bit hazardous.

Thanks!

@Firedawg - Yea, I hear ya... one of my many other hobbies over the years was (is) repairing/building guitar tube amps, so I've learned to have a lot of respect for high voltage circuits.
