[For Sale/Trade] Commodore 65 w/faulty Keyboard
« on: June 23, 2011, 05:49:45 PM »
It pains me to do this, but I have decided to part with my Commodore 65 that I purchase some 16 to 18 years ago.  Last time I checked, the system was working except for the keyboard due to a damage ribbon cable.  I will recheck the computer tonight and update with some pictures.  I figure there are some people here who would appreciate this machine more than just someone off eBay.  Being that this isn't fully working (bad keyboard), I am open to reasonable offers.  May be cash or other trades of similar value.  Just let me know what you are willing to part with to own this extremely rare piece of Commodore history. Feel free to ask questions here and I will try and answer them.  And be looking for the update later tonight after I have had a chance to retest and photograph it.

Alright, I've had a chance to hook it up to my monitor with a composite video cable and turn it on.  It powers on to the main  screen, just for some reason it is not in color, see the photo.  I don't have a digital cable to hook up to my monitor (1084d) to test the digital output.  I can remember back when I got it, it was in color.  I just can't remember if that was with the digital output or with the composite.  I don't have the keyboard with me right now, because it is at my work location.  I will hook the keyboard up to it tomorrow and turn it on in C64 mode (holding the commodore key down like on a C128) to see it that is in color on composite.  I put one of my Amiga floppies in the drive and the drive started spinning, and came up with an error because it wasn't formatted properly.  I will dig out my 1581 drive for my C64 and format a disk to try this out soon.  As you can see from the photo, the inside is clean.  And finally, for those wondering location - I am in Fort Smith, Arkansas.  I am open to shipping anywhere legally allowed by the US.  For a power supply, I am using a 1541-II/1571-II/1581 power supply.  Could this be part of the color issue?

Alright, another update on the working status of the computer.

I just finished building a RGB cable for my 1084D, and.... nothing.  Checked the switches and still not much except for a quick flash of color screen then black.

Not to worry, try the 1080 monitor I have, and... same status just a quick fraction of a second view of a color screen before blackness.

Well what to expect for 20 year old monitors.  Okay, one more way to test... the 1084SD monitor, but it's RGB input is female and not male like the other two.  Back to Radio Shack for another male DB9 connector, rebuild the cable with 2 male ends.

This time hooking up to the 1084SD.... A pretty color screen. See the photos.  I was able to download on my PC the 1st demo disk for the C65 (which is bootable,) transfer it to SD card, put the SD card into my Commodore 128D with built-in SD2IEC, use this to copy the disk files over to a 3.5" floppy with my 1581 drive.  Then put the 3.5" floppy into the C65, start up and a nice demo.  See photos in this and next postings.  I did not include one of the photos because it would probably be against rules as it is a nice 256 color photo of a girl sans top. Sorry guys.

Wait, what? Workbench, Fastbench, Deluxe Paint? Was not aware such things existed for the C65.

Workbench/Fastbench and DPaint don't really exist, they are just "demo" images of what would have been possible if the C65 was actually made into a production machine.

I am in the process of getting a new keyboard to replace the bad one.  This new keyboard will make this computer a complete fully functional C65.  After that I will test it some more and put it up for final sale.

Hi -

The reason you are getting a black and white picture in composite is that the C65 you have is a PAL model - as were the great majority of the units from Commodore. Its not a defect.

The power supply for the C65 was rated at 2.2 amp at 5 volts. This is quite a bit more than the one you are using. Wether the C65 actually drew that much I don't know.

The C65 power supply is essentially the same as used by the CD32 - perhaps the CD32 imposed a greater load.

Hey ShawnDude -

I would appreciate it very much if you could tell me what the frequencies are for the 2 oscillators near the top of the motherboard.

Thanks

Ernie

Hei ShawnDude,

thanks for sharing these screenshots and photos. Whoever the C65 goes to, I hope he will be also a fellow from this board so we will have the chance to see more photos. I am really curious what other demos there are. If you have the time, please post more screenshots.

Like kolla, I was very thrilled by the fact to see the Workbench and DeluxePaint on a non-Amiga computer by Commodore. Kind of reminds me of the Apple Lisa with it's MacOS-like operating system.

This unique piece of Commodore history needs to be preserved :).
