Um, I think so. If you can not solder well, someone here can do that. Which pins, located? Or show us a pic...

Hi,

Which pins are broken on the ide pins on the motherboard, or the pins on the drive. If on the hard drive, they can be repaired but will be harder. If on the motherboard,

1. Do you know how to use soldering iron?
If yes, find an old PC or PC ide card, remove pins from PC board and then remove broken pins from your Amiga motherboard. Put removed PC pins in Amiga Motherboard, hook up your hard drive ribbon, and watch it act like a PC.

2. If on hard drive, take to a shop and get it repaired, or buy new hard drive.

If NO
Take to shop and let them repair.

The thought occurs that most PC`s will use a 3.5" IDE port and Im fairly sure the pins are physically bigger than the ones on a 2.5" port.

It's not as big a disaster as it sounds. The broken IDE port can be desoldered (although mad soldering skills are probably requiered due to the age of the solder can make it tricky to remove), a new pinstrip shouldn't be hard to get hold of and solder into place.

In my A1200, I'm changing all pins of the IDE port because of corrosion: after removing the 2.5" IDE cable, some pins remained in the connector (cable). I have desoldered the IDE connector and I am trying to replace it with a new. This is long and fastidious.

Hi!

don't be scared, it's more or less easy to fix. You can buy the pins at any electronic shop, just remember that the size is for 2.5" HDs. Bring your 2.5" HD to the shop to compare the size. They have long blocks of pairs of pins and they cut as many as you need.

Remove the motherboard and put it on an empty table with enough space. If you just broke a pair of pins you can cut very very carefully the black plastic of pins you broke with a small box cutter. It's better that you relax and perform as many small cuts as you need, but avoid to apply much pressure to cut the pins because it's easy that you damage the motherboard so just relax and perform as many small cuts/scratches as you need... 100, 150... it doesn't matter how many small cuts, do it without applying force and slowly.

Once the black plastic is cut you just apply your soldering iron in the broken pins (looking at the part of the motherboard with no components), do it without touching much the motherboard, just the plumb and the pin. You can use small pliers to take the pin from the component part (but remember that the pin will go out softly without applying any force, don't pull from it much). Repeat the operation with the other pin. Once the pins are out you should remove stanium/plumb in case there's still some in each hole. Once the motherboard holes are cleaned you can cut a pair of jumpers from the ones you bought (use new ones, don't remove old ones from old motherboards). This is the easiest part for my taste, just be careful and avoid burning the motherboard. Be careful with dry soldering points and that's all.

I resoldered my A600 ide conector with no previous experience and everything went great. If you are unsure please ask a friend experienced with electronics. Repair it slowly, repair it well :-)

Good luck!

Indeed. The optimum strategy for this is to steal pins from a dead 2.5" IDE disk. I did exactly the same thing to my A1200's IDE header, sabotaging an old, deceased laptop disk did the trick nicely.

In fact, if you can't find any other source of suitable pins, one of those 99p IDE/CF adapters on eBay will make a perfectly adequate donor part.
