s-Video to the 1084s' 9 Pin Port?
« on: February 28, 2011, 09:29:20 PM »
Is it possible to build such an adaptor? One that would go from the S-Video port of Amiga Manaic's RGB Adaptors to the 9-pin port on the back of a Commodore 1084s?

Did you notice the 2 RCA-style plugs for video next to the audio jacks? (Note that not all 1084s have them). S-Video literally is nothing more than those 2 signals combined into a single plug. So with a custom cable to split S-Video into its component signals, plug one prong into luma, and the other into chroma (I think that's what they're called) and voila! Instant S-Video.

No shit?

Sweet! I guess I'll have to cut one of my extra S-Video cables then. :)

It's true, you can connect composite and s-video to the luma/chroma connectors. Very simple indeed. The 9pin port only receives an RGB signal, equal to the RGB signal of a SCART adapter.

Worked like a charm! I have to live with flicker, but it is a nice tie me over till I can find a S-Video flat screen monitor that can handle what ever a PAL Amiga can throw at it.

AFAIK the S-Video input was intended for the C64 which already offered quality video (probably a little known fact).

The original C64 (breadbox style) only offered composite video the C64c (A600 style case) has S-Video... :)

Depends on the cable, I think. We had a breadbox C64, but it had a 3-pronged monitor cable: mono audio, luma, and chroma. It may have been an after-market add-on, though.

It seems to depend on when and where your old ( breadbox) C64 was made, some of the very early ones were supposed to have luminance of pin 1 but in actual fact didn't , seemed mostly from my own ones to be the ones manufactured in Germany, while the two I have manufactured in England do have Luminance of pin 1... :)

C64 5 PIN DIN Video Out
1. Luminance
2. Ground
3. Audio Out
4. Composite Out
5. Audio In

C64c 8 PIN DIN Video Out

6. Chroma
7. Not Connected
8. +5V out
