Default How big a deal are 060 incompatibilities?

So I have seen mention that 060 processors are incompatible with a fair share of amiga software.

How big of a problem is this?

Should I expect a few problems here and there, significant issues or "oh my god, nothing bloody works" ?

I play quite a few games on my 1200, so thats the baseline I have to compare against.

Great to have new users in the amiga community IMHO... that is one myth that is still around. Oh,, another one, ISA slots in the A2000 is not electrically connected to the Amiga so u can not attach ISA network cards to it. :-)

heh, old hand but I could never afford any of this stuff back in the day

So in your opinion, an 060 won't cause a lot of problems ?

The 68060 is a little bit less Amiga game compatible than the 68040. This is mostly due to the larger instruction cache (which can be turned off or to 1/2) and the missing 64 bit integer math instructions which require the 68060.library to emulate. Most games that start from the hard drive work fine but installing the 68060.library for floppy use may be a pain. The 68060 is a great processor and much better at running 68020/68030 code than the 68040. Productivity software is very rare to have a problem with the 68060.

As you probably know by now I use an 060 Amiga everyday, and incompatibilities are virtually non existent on my set up. To be honest the the only problems I've ever had were with some WHDLoad slave files hence the reason I wrote my own to solve these problems...

An 060 on your A1200 just can't be be beaten and make things like Final Writer, Pagstream, PPaint & ImageFX work like a dream...

But you do need the Bridgeboard or this other guys Zorro card (forget his name) in order for you to make use of ISA... so maybe that's where people get confused.

And yeah, compatibility is great with the 060. When I had one, never had a problem running anything with it. Games wise, WHDLoad ensures awesome compatibility as well.

well, a lot of my games are HD installed, though I suppose I can always check out WHDload as well

Thanks guys! Very reassuring

A follow up question if you dont mind: I've heard that the 060 is generally okay in a 1200 wedge case. Should I concerned about heat issues?

There are some minor incompatibilities, but most importantly Lethal Weapon runs smoooooooth as butter.

You might want an Apollo if you want to close the trapdoor. The CPU faces upward, but the RAM limit is 32MB. Back when I had my Blizzard, I recall leaving the trapdoor off and raising the machine a little to keep things cool.

It can get pretty hot but nowhere near as hot as an 040, two simple solutions to keep it safe if you choose to do this are...

1. apply a small 6mm thick fan directly to the cpu (with a small 2mm gap between the cpu and fan to allow for air circulation...

2. Shape a heatsink that you can fit directly to the CPU but will also make contact with the metal base of the A1200s keyboard to dissipate heat very quickly...

I have tried both these methods with an overclocked Blizzard 060 @ 60Mhz and never had any heat related problems...

IMHO, it isn't the compatibility difference from 040 to 060 to be the issue. You can always Disable the CPU. It is all to do with the card the chip is on. The 3k will give you issues with some games period, 32 bit bus, 2.04 and up, etc... You can play with lots of the settings, but if it was designed for 1.3 on a 500 it will be a challenge...

An 060 in a cyberstorm versus and 040 in a warp engine, told an interesting story. I tested both cards in 2 similar systems at the same time. An overall experience of a faster system went to the warp engine. The build in SCSI on the WE certainly made up for alot of that experience. If your going to ray trace, then go with the 060... other than that, hold out for a warp engine for the 3k, it is the best choice...

The 060 is very compatible for running old software (esp. when you add WHDLOAD into the mix), the one to avoid is an 040.

Basically compatibility for running most classic software goes something like this (from best to worse) 020/030/060/040

I upgraded from an 030 to an 060 and so far the same games that failed me before, still fail me, which is few and far between. Gauntlet III is the only one that really comes to mind atm though.

As for apps, well most the apps I run are related to musick, and so far, so good! I love it! Now I just keep my fingers crossed that someone will be able to release a 3D based graphics card for the non-towered 1200...

...a pipe dream I'm sure.
