Best dock for 3.1?
« on: February 01, 2011, 06:27:52 AM »
What options are there for a dock app-launcher sort of deal for OS 3.1?
Preferably something that isn't a monster to set up :)

The best one, better than even AmiDock, is PolyNet

Another one which, in this case, works on low end systems, is MagicBar

Nice one Gulliver, I had not heard of Polynet. Have you tried it on 3.5/3.9?

Yes, I replaced a while ago AmiDock with it on 3.9.
I cant remember, but I believe it requires MUI to be installed, it has been so damn long ago...

Anyway, good luck :)

What are Polynet's features or attributes that make it better than Amidock?

Messed with amidock a bit last night, but seemed to have a hard time getting stuff actually added to it, even if I selected the right path. I'll have to mess around with it a bit more tonight :)

It's simple to add things to Amidock.  Just pick up the icon and set it in the dock.  Then bring up the menu from the bottom left of the dock and when it appears hit save.

ah, I'll try that. Trying to "add" in the menu didn't seem to work for some reason.

Thanks!

Hi Dan,

It eats less resources (Have you seen how much AmiDock drags 3.9 down?)
No nagging dock borders, that you cant get rid off (unlike AmiDock)

Image sample of PolyNet in action:

Just give it a try, and then make your own opinion :)

Cheers

Polynet is so much better than that horrible Amidock that comes with OS 3.9. I bought the MorphOS version years ago to use it on my MorphOS 1.x setup, I also got the 68k version for free with it which I used on my OS 3.9 setup. Luckily nowaydays is freely available on Aminet.

If you want a lean dock for OS 3.1 you could try ToolManager 2.1, it's the last version that doesn't use MUI. I use it on my OS 3.1 setups, you can also use it to put shortcuts in the Tools menu and assign keyboard shortcuts to applications. Version 3.x uses MUI.

You can see both docks in use here: http://www.amiga.org/forums/showpost.php?p=598595&postcount=46

Personally, I've found toolmanager V3.1 ideal.
I've used it under each version of the OS from 3.0 to 4.x.
I found it easy to set up.
Lots of options? Sure. But you can start simple and build from there.

There's 2 different programs called Amidock on the Amiga. I suspect this is where the confusion lays. The one that comes included with OS3.9 is soooo much better than the other one.
Near as I can tell this is where I write something under the guise of being innocuous, but really its a pot shot at another persons/peoples choice of Amiga based systems. Unfortunately only I cant see how transparent and petty it makes me look.
