44 pin IDE to SD Adapter
« on: December 17, 2010, 06:21:59 PM »
I was surfing and I came across a 44pin IDE to SD card adapter. Has anyone had any luck with these?

No reason it shouldn't work, but there are always oddities with these things with certain manufacturers.

As long as the hardware handles all of the conversion from SD to IDE then no drivers should be needed and it should work fine.

I have one of these and it is much slower than the usual CF to IDE (though i used class 6 SDHC).
One advantage is that the adapter and the SD together are smaller than a CF.

I have this]this and it works like a charm.
A bit tricky to set up, but works nice when done.

I used HDToolbox from os 3.9 cd.

Avoid the adapter that you linked. I have the same since I wanted to try it but I figured out that it doesn't work as intended. First of all it's slower than the CF solution and most important it supports MAX 2GB of SD card. Everything larger than 2GB and either the system won't boot or card isn't recognised from 3.9 HDToolBox.
Pyrre's adapter in the link is totally different and since he stated he tested it... you should go in that path if you need an SD card as opposed to CF.

Imho CF is better in every aspect (than the price ofc), since it doesn't use any conversion nor any chip to drive it. It's an 1-1 IDE replacement which makes it very compatible.

SD converters tends to be more complex than CF converters.
The SD-IDE card i have works nice with both SD and MMC cards. however. i doubt it will take cards larger than 2 gig.
I have only tested with 0.5 and 1 gig mmc and 0.5 gig SD so far....
But like i said, they were a bit tricky to set up at first.
I would recommend CF adapters any day...

SD cards bigger than 2GB don't exist. SD is defined as 2GB max. Bigger cards are called SDHC (HC = High Capacity). You need a SDHC adapter to run SDHC cards. SDHC readers can access SD cards, too, but SD readers are not able to read SDHC cards.

You are wrong, I have a 4GB SD card, _not_ SDHC. :)

I am not. Here are the specs: http://www.sdcard.org/developers/tech/sdcard/

What you have is either a SDHC card which does not have "SDHC" printed on it, or it does not follow the specs which means it does not work in many card readers. The former is more likely.

As i said earlier, i have the very same adapter than the one linked in the first post.
This one does work with a Class 6 8 GB SDHC of mine.
However, i get only about 1 MB/s from this disk on the IDE port of my A600 (with Apollo 630) instead of almost 2 MB/s from a HD or a CF.

I struggled a lot to get the IDE-SD adapter to work.... A LOT.
I used the boot disk/install disk from os 3.9 cd and its HDToolbox.
After i got it to show in hdtoolbox i was able to partition the sd/mmc cards and format them.
After that i have had no problems using them.
However, this was in my A1200. i do not have IDE in a 500 or A2000. yet.

In my pc it showed up instantly. and it might have been because i formatted it as a pc harddrive first before i tried it in A1200. Might be worth a try.
