AmigaOS4.1 announced for "Classics"!
« on: October 24, 2010, 08:15:04 AM »
Hi all,

reporting from Amiwest 2010, I'm not sure if anybody has reported this already, but... since I can't find any information about it, I'm happy to tell you that Ben Hermans announced the coming release (before the end of this year) of AmigaOS4.1 for "classic" Amigas equipped with PPC accelerator boards.

He didn't mention if it's gonna be a free update or not, he also didn't mention if it's gonna include of all the features already present in the current AmigaOS4.1 version for the "nextgen" PPC machines.

This is great news!

Cheers,

Good news for the Amigans still having working BlizzardPPC or CyberstormPPC board.

Excellent news for AmigaOS 4 developers, that they can ditch AmigaOS 4.0 and develop for 4.1 only, without ignoring the classic users.

Personally I feel my microAmigaOne is starting to age and getting slow, so can't wait for the AmigaX1000. Sold my Amiga 4000 two years ago.

I don't wish to imagine how would it be doing modern computing on PPC turbo board from 1997, connected to a computer from 1992, but for the fun of doing it, it is acceptable.

I've played with it on and off for a few weeks now.

It's very very good, almost up to MorphOS standards.

I have probably the fastest CSPPC board over the world. (604/400MHz with 060/66MHz). Believe me it's really fast. Enough fast for use every day :)

For example, CPU 68k&PPC speed test by SysSpeed:

For 68060/66MHz:
 MIPS - 86.53
 MFLOPS - 32.62

For PPC 604e/400MHz:
 MIPS - 581.89
 MFLOPS - 400.01

UW-SCSI SCA 36GB with SFS:
 CreateFile 22.59 MB/s
 WriteFile 28.45 MB/s
 ReadFile 24.98 MB/s
 RawRead 28.74 MB/s

Looks very nice isn't it?
So I think the new OS4.1 for my classic Amiga will run on it smooth enough :)

Good news. I hope they support scsi on Blizzards and include swap support (or at least ZorRAM support) otherwise my interest will probably be null. Radeon support would be a nice plus although not vital for me.

Having bought Classic OS4.0 when it first came out for use with my Blizzard060/PPC 60Mhz/240Mhz and being sorely disappointed with the speed at which it ran, I can only hope the OS4.1 has had some major speed improvements made to it to make it useable.

I not getting my hopes built up though as I very rarely use 4.0 due to the speed issues and also the fact that the one and only update for 4.0 was way back in June 07, when purchasers of Classic OS4.0 were left in the lurch when support for it seemed to be abandoned.

So I will warily keep my eye on it this time to see what others think of it first... ;)

This is good news. It seems like a lot of folks that bought 4.0 for classic were pretty dissapointed and went  back to 3.9. I'm glad they decided to do this.

Ah, excellent. Fingers crossed for ZorRAM support. At the very least, swap space support will make the system far more usable.

I have to be honest, The only thing I use my OS4.0 partition for is the DVD burning program AMIDVD. Even then I only use it to create the ISO file as I haven't finished writing my own one yet, then I quickly switch back to OS3.5 to burn it as my own burner progs work faster on the 68K side than the OS4.0 PPC ones.

I still however would like to see if there is any improvement in OS4.1 but will be very wary of it, as past experience and lack of support for 4.0 has left me a wee bit sceptical... :)

I personally would like to see support for the BlizzardPPC scsi controller which was one of the weakest points (if not the weakest) 'cause due to this the IDE controller made the CPU to waste cycles for disk access/transfers on the Amiga1200...

We'll see. I think this is a good move for hyperion, I don't think compiling OS4.1 for the classics would have needed too much effort anyway, they will get extra cash to continue improving the OS and so all hardware platforms and users (sam, peg, a1, etc) will benefit from this.

Cheers,
