Questions about the A1200, please help!
« on: December 05, 2003, 10:16:45 PM »

Hi all, nice to meet you. I was an Amiga 500 owner and im about to receive a bog standard Amiga 1200 from a friend who doesent use his.

Now it doesent have a HDD, CD rom drive or any goodies, its just a plain A1200. Correct me if im wrong but that wont have an operating system will it? just workbench on floppy disk?

Exactly what do i need to get it up and running with Amiga OS? what goodies etc do i need?

Many thanks  :-D

a 2.5" HD will slot right into the machine anything bigger than 80Mb will do...
You could consider an  `accelerator` that will allow you to increase the memory.
The internet is full of PD to download...just use google.com

I used to run an 1200 off just one floppy, but you really need all the disks, try to get at least 3.0
You can then install them onto your new Hard-drive...

The best place to find PD-games would be Aminet.
I'm to lazy to explaiun what Aminet is and how you get the games from there to your 1200. I'd recomend that you get an old 2.5 HD (a few hundred megs should do) first.
A CPU-upgrade is not really neccesary if you only plan to use the 1200 for retro-gaming, allthough a RAM expansion would probably be nice.

If you're not planning on putting any money into it, I'd recomend that you find a local Amiga user group and see if they can help you with getting games onto floppies.

BTW, there is plenty of old commercial games that has been released for free on the Internet...

@ godspeed :

Back to the roots would also be a nice place to go if you're looking for old Amiga games.

Those Assasins disk look just what im after, but arnt they all in ADF ??I have nearly all the Amiga 1200 games on ADF but its just not the same running WINUAE. The whole process of downloading games on your pc and getting them on a disk for an Amiga seems eternaly impossible! :-?

did u get 5 or 6 Floppies with WORKBENCH 3.0 with your a1200 ?  , if you have the DISK labelled "INSTALL" then you just insert that and install workbench 3.0 (or 3.1 if thats what u got) onto your hdd.

anyway i would recomend you to get 1. A hdd , 2. A Acceleartor (any... 020 with 4mb fast is infact abig Speedup (just adding fastmem to a trapdoor card) ..  3. is to add a cdrom , but if u add a cdrom then u will need a new psu also..

i would advice you to look on EBAY and on AMIBENCH.COM for people selling second hand gizmos like 020 or 030 cards for a1200 and maybe a 2'5 inch hdd etc..

goodluck...

yes a1200 is backwards compatible with a500 ... BUT there is always some games which wont work unless you degrade with software like "RELOKICK" etc..

if you have a hdd then you can use stuff like " WHDLOAD "  check the site at Whdload.de  ...

perfect tool to play classic games on any amiga...

oh and...yes EMU suxx...cool that you want to use the real thing..

Thanks man, i was beginning to think i was sad for not wanting to use an emulator, i hate them!! grrrr

The real dilema is, i spent a couple years gathering together all the games i used to love in ADF, but really dont like playing them on an emu. Wanted a real Amiga again and couldent get any games i wanted on it, madness!

My ultimate question is, can you get ADF's back onto a rea; Amiga with relitive ease, and if so how?

Many thanks to you all ;-)

To put the ADFs onto amiga disks you need to first transfer them to the amiga (using floppy disks or PC2Amiga software and a laplink [null modem] cable).

Once they are on the amiga you need to downloada  program called ADF Blitzer which will then allow you to make the ADF file into a readble amiga formatted floppy disk.
