I have made some progress (well sort of) I went and purchased a new sata2 hard drive and hooked it up to the Sam booted up and managed to get go the workbench screen followed the onscreen stuff like setting up the languages and stuff got to the hard drive part tried to partition hard drive but an error came up saying it could not format the drive so I restarted the system to start over again and now every time I try to start the installation it hangs on the amigaos 4.1 screen any ideas ?

I've found a step-by-step installation guide that might be of help. You can find the link below:

I believe this is more detailed than the guide in the manual that came with the OS.

That's great but my problem is that when I first tried to install amiga os 4.1 I got all the way to the partition screen try to format cd0 (which I forgot was the DVD drive not the hard drive) so decided to restart the system and start over again but when it is finished installing the kickstart config and I'm presented with the amiga Os 4.1 screen it hangs, I'm getting no drive. Activity at all.

I don't think you've caused any damage to the harddrive. Can you select "boot from CD-ROM" in the boot-menu? Then it should boot straight off the CD and you can install the OS again. Be careful when partitioning and follow the guidelines.

You can also try holding down both mouse buttons during startup to see if you can enter the Amiga boot menu, just like on the A1200 for example. By doing this, you can check if it works without startup-sequence.

im trying to boot from the cd rom it loads all the kickstart files etc.. but when the amigaos 4.1 screen appears the cd-rom spins for few seconds and hd led then i get no activity i have left it for a 10- 15 mins at a time to see if carrys on spinng but nothing happens it just hangs. i tried holding both mouse buttons down but it just continues to boot from the cd drive?

what if i was to install linux debian for the sam and then install amigaos 4.1 from there?

Once the system has loaded the Kickstart into memory and it resets, please press down both mouse buttons. This should bring forth a preboot menu.

Please also try to disconnect the Ethernet cable to see if that works. If I'm not mistaken, the boot-sequence stops until a net connection is made. Might be wrong down, but worth a shot.

I've found this on another forum:

"-HD goes in J20, DVD in J23
- make sure to plug your ethernet cable into port0 (one at outer edge of MB)
- the USB keyboard must be installed on the higher/upper USB connector at rear of MB"

I saw the video just now. How about booting without startup-sequence, type "set echo on" in the shell and "execute s:startup-sequence" and then see where in the startup-sequence it hangs?

I don't have a SAM or OS4.1, but that's what I would do on OS3, OS4.0, MorphOS, AROS etc.
