Today's tip: $4.55 joypads
« on: November 15, 2009, 08:08:37 PM »
This might be old news, but I thought I'd mention it to be sure.

Just received two of these from Deal Extreme. $4.55 each, free shipping worldwide:

http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.30530

Works great on Amiga, the only thing worth mentioning is that buttons B and C are Fire 1 and 2.  The other buttons have no effect.

If you're looking for a brand new, affordable joypad, get one of these.

I'm sure it works as you said but, after looking at the pictures, it looks like the connector is mini-USB??

How exactly do these connect to the Amiga?

Looks exactly like the 6-button Sega Genesis control pads of yore. I have several of those and use 'em all the time on my Amigas. Best damn pads to be sure. I am told though, that you need this special adapter cable in order to take advantage of the 2nd firing button. This is confirmed as not even the Sega joypad program from Aminet "activates" any of the other buttons. Even the readme file mentions an adapter. Those adapters can be bought from Best Electronics though and cost around $11 IIRC. No need to monkey around with USB either as these are DB9 friendly.

I used to take Mega Drive controllers apart and move a few wires about.  IIRC the 'B' button is already connected, so I used the 'C' button as 2nd Fire.

Remember reading something back in the 90s about Mega Drive controllers.  They can apparently damage the Amiga cos of the way some lines are connected.  If you`re handy with a soldering iron it won be a problem  :)

Like save2600 said, it's a standard DB9F.  Connects directly to the Amiga's joystick port.

Ah OK. Their image must be wrong as the enlarged sample picture doesn't show a DB9 that I've ever seen ;)

No, I wasn't commenting on the one pictured... that does indeed look like a mini-usb plug. I was talking about the DB9 compatible Sega/Megadrive pads with the 'Best Electronics' adapter.

If that generic looking Sega 6-button pad is indeed DB9, perhaps the plug is tipped on its side? Sure does look USB to me too though... but if you're using it with a Miggy - has got to be DB9  :-)

Awesome! If I didn't already have a bevy of NOS 6-button Sega pads, I'd surely have gone for this. Funny how the first pic though looked like it was terminated mini-usb. lol   Thanks for clarifying!

Look at the plug sideways, and it will look exactly like it does in that photo. It's just a DB9 plug on its side.

Oh yeah, and we should clear this up for sure.

2-button Sega Master System, 3-button and 6-button Sega MegaDrive/Genesis pads all work on Amigas for any game that supports controllers with one or two buttons. If you try to use a Sega pad in a game that needs a CD32 pad, button 1/B will act as the Red button, but button 2/C activates every button on the CD32 pad at once, including the Play/Pause button, which often causes the game to pause every time you press button 2/C.

You don't need to modify a Sega pad for it to work perfectly with all 1 and 2 button games. You can't modify them to act as CD32 pads unfortunately, but if you're handy with a soldering iron you can add a modification to make the A button on a MegaDrive/Genesis pad act as the UP direction. This makes them incredibly handy for playing platform games that use UP to jump, and racing games that use UP to accelerate.

Are you 100% sure about that?  I`m 99% sure the second fire button doesn`t work unless you mod the controller...

I'm with Tension here. Feeling rather retarded and having drunk many pints up to this very moment, I am quite sure a resistor or other line needs to be tapped in order to enable the 2nd fire button on a Genesis pad...

Something else that needs to be brought to attention Re: the 6-button pad... there is an I.C. resident, where - you need to hold in the 'Mode' button upon bootup that allows the gamepad to be "read" as a 'standard' 3-button Genesis pad. Sorry... MegaDrive... lol  (what a stupid name Sega!)

I have been using Sega Genesis joypads on my Amiga 2-button games for decades.  They work perfectly on all my stacks of 2-button Amiga games.

I bought them at Toys R Us for $6.00 each back around 1993.

The ones I got are not made by Sega.  They say "High Frequency" on them.

No modification needed!
