Screw the OS. OS's are outdated concepts these days and what nobody who falls for the whole "AMEEGA WILL ARISE AND OWN THE WORLD!!11oneone" shtick (I think there's like...six people still left who think that way...) seems to grasp is that the quickest booting, "most responsive feeling" (seriously, WTF is that? That's like saying "extra medium rare") most compact OS in the world is useless without a baseline of decent programs to run on it.

Ibrowse is about six years out of date as browsers go. There's no office suite, and all the little widgets and toys that most people can get for free on other platforms are "wait a while then pay" on the Amiga.

Let's not even address the issue of games.

Running DeluxePaint, Imagine and a smashing good build of Quake-1 and Freeciv ain't gonna get you off of the honorable mentions page at /.

Hobby computer? You betcha. I keep hoping one day I'll stumble across an A2000 with some stuff in it or an A500 with GVP HD+Accel+PC emulator board or something cool like that - but as a toy.

Unless Amiga, Inc. has strategically partnered with some developers, and I mean real developers, not bedroom coders, they can forget it.

(But then you yourself already know this. :-) )

I hope this is for real because I've got money to spend. I've got tons of classic Amiga stuff and I'm ready for some modern Amiga stuff.

Come one Amiga Inc and ACK!

But x86 is modern right, even though it was one of the first architectures to be developed? The ppc is actually a rather new architecture and quite a few modern stuff use it, including the wii and the xbox 360. I do however believe that it is a whole lot more expensive and less available than lets say x86.

How is Ubuntu like AmigaOS? I am running it on my x86 pc, but i find it nothing like AmigaOS at all.

@thomas
You are right, ubuntu it is so much better than amigaOS ever was or will be. Good point.

And YES you are right about PPC also. intel is better just becasue it faster and cheaper. Maybe Amiga Inc will take a loss on each unit just like Sony... that WOULD make me happy!

BTW no xbox360...I don't care for it. Quite a but slower than the "CELL" the ps3 has. I don't have one of them either... No need to spend money on toys, have plenty clasisc amigas!

I agree the concept of a new amiga is misguided.. a time that has come and gone. The face of computing has changed and Amiga Inc will not be part of it. That being said I will still be using my a4kt with great pleasure and won't be donating any cash for mister Bill McEwen for some thing that should have been released in 1999.

cheers!

Funny you say that, as it came out one year earlier and yet most of the games that exist for both platforms runs actually better on the xbox 360. The ps3 sounds all good theoretically, but so far it has not lived up to the hype in real life perfomance.

It is probably better all over, but that is not so odd considering that AmigaOS has not been developed for years until OS4 and thus it lags behind with some features like memory protection, multiuser and similar. It still does has quite a few advantages over a linux distro like ubuntu though. It is much more responsive, needs much less resources, boots very fast, datatypes and it makes actually more sense with a drawer for drivers, folder for monitors, printers and so on.

Meh. I tried Ubuntu. It still seemed a lot like linux to me and i hated it. I'd rather use Windows...

(and yes, I know Ubuntu is a linux distribution, i was hoping Ubuntu would hide the unixyness).

Yeah sure xbox looks good today.. give the ps3 some time, next year you will see the difference.
Being in the 3d industy I happen to see quite a bit of stuff being developed and the ps3 is looking much stronger. I the end I don't care who wins, but I KNOW the ps3 is stronger.

OS4 is a nice "pet" project but simply can't compeat with a proper OS. More "responsive" to do what? There are options other than linux for embeded system, for example QNX... amigaOS is full of issues, not to meantion that you have to deal with amiga inc to use it! :-P

@xeron
Enjoy your "windows".... As spidy said "with great power come great responsobility" Not everybody can handel that!

Uhm... So what happened to that appealing $300 PowerVixxen board which was announced by ACK about a year ago? It had an excellent power/money ratio...
It is abandoned?
It is the same board but go a $200 bump? Could a.inc be responsible for this bump?

Vapourware.

Expect to see "new Amiga hardware" running on the first Battlestar commissioned by the US Air Force in 2085.

Perhaps it's the AmigaVs Atari ST sequel... ;-)

For years everyone {bleep}es (and rightfully so) about the lack of relevant development for the platform, now that something finally concrete is announced, everyone still {bleep}es. This whole deal might even flop, but it is something never-the-less.

@billchase

well you know when I was little boy I wanted a fire truck...now I don't so much anymore.

So if you parents gave you everything you ask for (as a kid) at age 40 I don't think you would be *as* thrilled as you would have been when you where 13....you MIGHT even be frustrated with them.
(in the computer world missing your dealine by 8 years is about 27 human years:-) )

back in 1999 I wanted to upgrade my amiga and keep doing animation with it...today I'm honestly happy to have moved on as new better alternatives have come up. A new amiga is no longer on my wish list. Even in 1999 I already had been using SGI and windows to get big jobs done but still thought the amiga could catch up... In 2007 how that pitifull crew will manage to catch up with where multi-media and animation (let alone OS design!) is today should be quite entertaining.
Does Amiga-Inc even own the OS? Or do they just assume as long as we ask them 20 question every so often they own it all?

I understand there are lots of people on this site that are obsesed with the amiga platform making some kind of massive comeback and a fraction of those people will buy ANY new amiga product...but if you look at history and the current market, it's well a joke.

As for this whole thing, let's wait and see if anything even happens...but Bill blew the timeframe. The last thing the computing world needs today is a new amiga... sorry, painfull to watch this unfold.

Default Neat.

Except it doesn't say what the hardware is supposed to do.
