Display 32bit OS4 Icons in Amiga OS3.x!
« on: February 21, 2007, 08:21:09 PM »
Bernd Roesch (author of AfA) has "ported" the AROS icon.library to Amiga OS3.x. He has also expanded it's capabilities. This new library makes it possible for Amiga OS3.x to use the same icons as OS4!

Features:

-Displays OS4 style 32bit icons (dual image)
-Displays AROS style 32bit icons (dual image)
-Displays "regular" PNG icons
-Displays 256 color Glow Icons correctly (Ken's Icons)
-Speeds up icon display -- Glow Icons are 10x faster display and need NO pens (they have perfect color precision.)
-Replaces the Deficons utility
-Works with Workbench AND Dopus Magellan!(AmiKit)
-Icons display correctly while dragging (including PNG icons)

Bernd has also created a "patch" to allow RAWBinfo to work correctly with the new icon.library.

The new library requires AfA to be installed and replaces both PowerIcons and Deficons. Bernd recommends that you keep the 'start-icon' of PowerIcons on the desktop for compatibility testing and in the event something fails.

This is the final beta release. Please report any bugs or conflicts you find.

Mason's website is a great source of 32bit OS4 style icons and I've also painted a set of 32bit def_icons (plus a few other miscl icons)for use with Bernd's new library.

Nice, though I'd rather see him bring AFA out of the development hell it's stuck in right now. Or better yet turn it into a proper AROS 68K-native fully up to spec with the x86-native version.

But then really, for that we first need the kickstart replacement which isn't even being developed and for Dr. Schulz to finish the x64 core; which will apparently make porting much easier - and I think that's on hold while he finishes up the USB stack. Still, I can always look forward to being able to replace AmigaOS on my 1200.

P.S. "He has also expanded it's capabilities" means "He has also expanded it is capabilities", which just sounds silly. I'll now wait for the inevitable Godwin's Law breakage where I get called a grammar-nazi.

You sure?

From AskOxford.com:

"The main role of the apostrophe is to show possession or association. If the noun is singular, you form the possessive by adding 's: the cat's paws"

In this case, "It's" refers to AfA's features (there's possession again (and there's a contraction)).

This is the way I've always written it.  Of course, my English isn't perfect -- I could be wrong!  ;-)

"its" is for indicating possession.  That is its only purpose.  Or maybe its' :P

No, the apostrophe is used both to indicate possession by a named person or object as in "the cat's paws" and also to signify a contraction as in can't, won't, don't, isn't and importantly "it's" which is only ever a contraction for it is. The third person singular neuter-gender possessive pronoun is always "its", no apostrophes anywhere in site; this follows the convention of "his" and "hers" the masculine and feminine versions of "its". Referring back to the cat and his paws, I can't write "hi's paws" can I?

As for possesive apostrophes coming at the end of the word, this only applies still in cases of named persons/objects to accomodate names ending in "s" like e.g. "Marcus' Amiga was totally pimpin'" (just to give the post some pretense of being related to Amigas).

OK boys and girls. The school is over today.

The name of tomorrow's test is: "What do you know about AfA_OS?" followed by a discussion named "What do you think about AfA_OS?"

Bye  :-P

In this case, it'd also be acceptable to write "Marcus's Amiga".

However, possessive apostrophes at the ends of words also denote plurals... E.g. "My parents' house" (house belonging to more than one parent), etc.

And... as we're being picky, you might also want to check the spelling of "possessive" and "accommodate" !  :-)

Anyway... back to the original topic - great to see this, should make quite a few Workbenches look prettier!

Why are you arguing about grammer and not talking about icons???  I'm pretty sure that is what the new item was about.
