NeRP's AmigaOne Hardware Review and Case Mod
« on: August 09, 2003, 12:04:03 AM »
A site with an in detail explaination and pictures of the AmigaOneXE motherboard.  I did it because people never really showed me the level of detail I wanted with the AmigaOne motherboard in their articles

Hope you enjoy it, and I'll try to answer any questions you may have...

Good stuff.  Is there any way through BIOS to make the CPU go at it's rated clockspeed?  Why is the system not already clocked at that speed, anyway?

Well, for whatever reason, Eyetech have declared 800MHz the 'rated' speed for the system as a whole.

It *would* be nice to know the degree of flexibility in the settings, and the reason for such an 'underclock.'

(My guess for a contributing factor would be that Moto's speed-binning probably works a bit different from, say, Intel's - despite any tricks Apple have pulled off, perhaps 933 is the highest it can go before it melts?  There's also the question of heat dissipation off the Articia, which I remember was suspect a while back.)

Nothing so elaborate. IIRC the reason for it to be a 933 is that Motorola couldn't deliver any 800MHz. Eyetech sold him 800, not more.. if he would have raised the spec now, what would the hundreds of people that already bought 800 think/say? He paid for 800, he got 800..

There's a whole article about it, written by Alan in Total Amiga..   this or the previous issue. Go look it up, it's in there.

These are interesting times we live in. New machines in progress, new AmigaOS in progress.. userbase slowly, slowly growing..  which is a success in itself.

You don't use the BIOS to do it, you use the dip switches located on the CPU module to do it.  Very easy to do... :)

I have heard that the reason that it is not clocked at 933mhz by default is that I'm paying for an 800mhz processor...  Motorola couldn't deliver 800mhz parts apparently, and so now we have underclocked 933mhz parts.  A side benefit to that is that it keeps the CPU cooler than it would be at 933mhz.  I don't particularily like noise, so I don't really mind it running cooler so that I don't have to use a 5lb slug of copper and a 10,000RPM fan to keep it cool :)

I have heard that the G4 has to stay below 40C to work right.

Why, I imagine they'd say "Wow, thanks for the overclocking info!"

I know that's what I'd do.
