Default RealNetworks to release more code

RealNetworks is expected to release more streaming-media source code Monday, in the latest move to fend off Microsoft and the MPEG-4 standard. Maybe we can make a better player for our favorite computers then!?!?!

I followed Real's Helix project with interest when it was first announced, but then forgot about it for a while as I can't seem to read tech news on a regular basis. I just visited the Helix web site to answer the question, "Are there any PowerPC binaries?". After SSL connections, a slightly convoluted registration process, agreeing to two license agreements, and wading-through a dozen or more pages, I found that the answer is "no".

As a matter of fact, the only binaries currently available are for Win32 and Linux (X86 Linux, I'd assume), which seems to indicate that Real is making Helix available as *OS* libraries, meaning that we'll still likely end-up unsupported! I thought the point of Helix was to support platforms that aren't already covered, through binaries coded into some generic assembly format for each processor... What a total waste! RealPlayer support currently looks a long way off again. :-(

(If anyone reading this is a Helix developer and can correct me on any of the above, please do so.)
