Yvon Rozijn the author of the Amiga internet web browser "AWeb" has released his source code so that others in the Amiga community may continue with AWeb's development.

So who's going to try and update Aweb then? This is the first decent Web browser thats had it's source code available to the public so come on, Let's get coding and make a real good browser to show off the Amiga`s power (I would love to do web pages that had Amiga IFF anims on, So what if PC users cant see it? ) :-D

This would have been a really great project for the AROS team. Well, maybe they will still make good use of it as opensource!

The APL seems similar to the GPL - i wonder why he didnt got with that licence

Major kudos to Yvon for releasing the source! Too many times, good software has died when the programmer lacks the time and/or interest to continue development. Hopefully this source release will help keep AWeb relevant for at least a few more years. Maybe it will even encourage other programmers to release their source code? :-)

My only disappointment is that I expected to see code for an AWeb 4.0 alpha, or at least something beyond 3.4. If any work was done on a future AWeb, I guess it's been lost. Years ago on the AWeb mailing list, I remember William Parker from Amitrix soliciting users to test a new AWeb cache system. Whatever it was, sadly it never made it into a commercial release.

I look forward to seeing a new AWeb open-source development team!

Well, it's by choise mostly. I don't want to sit by the comp for enless hours anymore. Life is so much bigger than that And besides, the sweet period is almost over. Old habits tend to kick back after that ;o)

My only worry about AWeb going open source is the possibility of it becoming too unstable. When one developer works on a project it becomes his baby, & would resist submitting releases that would make him "lose face". With open source, it's a pool of everyone tacking on their kludge in hopes that it'll swing with the rest of the code. Tossed out to the Sharks in the waters to beta test, it becomes a frustrated mess possibly irreversible. It nearly killed Netscape (remember Ver.6.0??).
The Amiga Community doesn't need that kind of fate. I'm an avid AWeb user for the way it functions today-even with it's weaknessess, it's the one Amiga browser I prefer (much to Wayne's dislike-heheheh!) Think I'll make a backup copy of it now before I lose it to a buggy beta upgrade.

There's no need for the AROS Team to get a different kind of license for AWeb: it's an external application, it doesn't need to be distributed together with AROS.

Anyway, being the one who's making AWeb compile with gcc, I can tell you that I'd not want AWeb to be part of AROS: without offense for Yvon, but it's pretty much spaghetti code, you can see how features have been "stratified" over other features, and the source code itself is in a very bad shape.

Moreover, AWeb requires classact/reaction, which AROS doesn't have, nor I think it'll ever have (we've got Zune, a replacement for MUI).

Granted, Yvon has made a great job (don't forget that AWeb is mostly a one-man project), but I think that AWeb, as it is now, is not easily expandable and modern features cannot be implemented without rethinking the whole engine.
