My A1200 only boots if teh top cover is lifted off slightly. With it in place, it comes up to the insterting disk animation. I'm assuming it's a loose connecton, but I'm kinda new to the 1200, any ideas where I should start looking????

Some A1200 models came with a hard disk that worked fine when new, but after time, didnt spin up to speed fast enough to be recognised when cold booting. Its possible that you may have one? You can always check by simply leaving the cover on and warm booting.
Just an idea. Let us know if it works. Otherwise it may be like the case creasing the ide cable or similar, in which case you may need to adjust where it is sitting? |

You may also want to check the metal shielding that the HD sits on, specifically around the edge nearest underside trapdoor.
I seem to think that although you can squeeze in a 3 1/2" IDE in there, it can sometimes cause the metal plate to touch the circuit board. A little "Bend" in the shield should fix it. I've circled the area below....

if you have a 3,5" HD try to loosen your srews form the A1200 Case, it could be that the upper cover of the A1200 housing is pressing on your HD too much.
Wich causes the HD to fail.

It's a Seagate ST9077A hard drive that's in it, I don't know if that's the OEM drive or not? The case just says "A1200" and it's my understanding that the ones that had the hard disk installed at the factory were labeled as "A1200HD" but I also understand that a lot of dealers installed the hard drives when they got them.
I tried a cold boot with the cover on and now it comes up fine.. Damn gremlins.... |
