I don't have time to watch the interview right now, but I'll share an opinion anyway:
Free markets work, but only as long as it they don't interfere with individual liberty, e.g. when a coporation as an entity has more rights than the individuals it employs. Free markets can be manipulated, at which point they are no longer free markets, e.g. mortgage-backed securities. Speculation is not necessarily an accurate reflection of free market value, e.g. unduly deflated or inflated stock prices. (You can argue against that, but the points for and against are essentially the same thing.)

I'm afraid I will never understand you Americans! Before I start about capitalism, can anybody explain me what's wrong with socialism and communism? I'm not talking about Stalin or Kim Young Ill, they are dictators, not communists. In theory communism is an economic system, not a political system. That was of course very different in states like the USSR or the GDR. The "tradition" in Russia was different: The change of system came after a revolution in the Zar's Russia, a capitalistic dictator (the Zar)has been replaced by another dictator. (In fact, in the beginning it was more or less democratic. There were Lenin, Trotzki and Stalin. After Lenins dead Stalin took the power and Trotzki had to flee...) To make it shorter: America, Land of the free. How free is somebody without work, without the chance to find new work. Can he travel? You have free speech in America. Yes? Where? In a corner of a park, or in the internet. But not in a newspaper, the radio or TV. Not as long as they are living from advertisings.
You in America believe that most european states are "socialist". In fact only one state in Europe, Moldavia, has a communist government, elected only a few years ago, and reelected with 50 % last sunday. Why? Because the average income was in the year 2000 only 20% of the income in 1990, when Moldavia left the Soviet Union. Now it is back at the level of 1990, that's why the communists were reelected. In the "bad old GDR" unemployement was 0%, now it is official about 10 %. Nobody had to starve, education and medical welfare was free. Of course the economic system of the state directed economy did not work, but you see the same problems in very big companies: No creativity, a lot of people in management and nobody is listening to the engineers. Look why Commodore died... There is absolutely nothing wrong with market economy, but there is something wrong if the tax-payer has to rescue big banks and companies who were not working good, because the end of those companies and banks would let the whole system collaps. In the case of the banks it is much worse than even Karl Marx expected. In the next few years we will see the Dollar collaps, and maybe the Euro, too. Maybe China is on the right way with a communist system with a controlled free market economy. And don't forget: economic system != political system! BTW: I'm a member of the German socialist party "Die Linke". |
