Default WHDLoad: Some questions ...

Hello,

From what I read on these forums, WHDLoad can help me play games from my hard drive even if such games don't have an install option (example: lemmings). Is this right?

If so can someone help me a little ...
I have downloaded WHDLoad_dev.lha and also lemmings Disk 1 and Disk 2 (I do have the original of these, they came with my A500+). Now what do I need to do?

Also why is WHDLoad_dev given in lha format and not in adf? Is there a difference between these two formats?

Regards,
Sim085

after installing WHDload, you need to get http://www.whdload.de/games/Lemmings.lha which will install the game from your disks.

think of lha as being like .zip or .cab, and adf as being like .iso, as adf is an exact copy of a disk, and lha is a copy of some files and are compressed so the file size is smaller.

I think what may help you is giving the full specification of what hardware you have, and looking at http://www.whdownload.com/, and if you like it dont forget to register whdload :-D

Thank you very much for your reply. I downloaded Lemmings from http://www.whdownload.com/. The download is in zip format. When I open the zip however I do not have any .lha files. I only have Disk.1, and Disk.2!

I can obviously download the .lha files from the site you have suggested, but I still would like to know what the zip file I downloaded (for lemmings) is used for.

Regards,
Sim085

the zip file from whdownload is everything you need. all you do is extract the files to a folder on your amiga and run it.

someone else has done all the hard work for you already ;-)

Ok, Since I am using WinUAE I guess this is just a game of moving the contents of the zip file into a folder inside my Workbench right? (I did this and when I start workbench I can see the files I moved).

Now (sorry for the stupid question) how can I install WHDLoad from an .lha file? Do I need to install some other tool on Workbench? At the moment I have a plain new workbench 2.1 installation!

just use something like winrar on windows to extract the lha just like you would for the zip, and then go into winuae and install from there.

i would also really suggest getting http://www.aminet.net/util/boot/skick346.lha now, and reading http://www.whdload.de/docs/en/index.html as you will need kickstart files from your amiga or amiga forever.

once you get used to it i would also suggest using classic wb http://classicwb.abime.net/ at some point.

Thank you very much for your help I have already read parts of that site (although I must admit not all of it).

Do I need to have the kickstart in place for the installation process? I have extracted the files and moved them to my workbench. However when I click on the install button I get the error "Wait for disk activity to finish". .. always!

it shouldnt need any disk access like that on winuae. i think you are getting a few things mixed up.

1 - install http://www.whdload.de/whdload/WHDLoad_usr.lha - this will copy all the whdload files to the correct places

2 - download http://www.aminet.net/util/boot/skick346.lha, and copy everything in the kickstarts folder to devs:kickstarts/ on winuae

3 - put your kickstart files in devs:kickstarts/ and rename them as it says on http://www.whdload.de/docs/en/need.html. you dont need to do this untill whdload asks you for a certain kickstart.

4 - get a game like lemmings from http://www.whdownload.com/games/Pack-L-2007-01-30/Lemmings_v1.4_2Disk_0132.zip and extract the files to a folder which you can get on winuae and run the .slave file

5 - have fun!

What am I doing is extract the contents of the .lha file from windows. Then copy all this in my WinUAE installation. I am clicking on the install button and I receive the error. This happens with the user version as well! Is it bad if I extract the contents of from Windows. Also do I maybe have to download an older version of whdload since I am using workbench 2.1?

there is nothing wrong with extracting in windows, just extract to a folder you can read from in winuae. as you just cant install it, maybe the version of installer you have needs to be updated.

In workbench I have the folder Expansion. From windows I moved the .lha contents to the folder 'Expansion' in workbench. I then start workbench from winuae and under the folder expansion I have the whdload installation icon. Is this correct way to do it? Or winuae has some other method to do this?

SOLVED THIS PROBLEM

I just upgraded the CPU from 68000 to 68060!! So does this mean that WHDLoad cannot be installed from a 68000 CPU!?

Just another question ....

I remeber my brother telling me that Defender of the Crown did not come on an installer and that he just copied the contents of the disk onto the drive! Wouldn't this also be possible with a game such as lemmings? In that case what does WHDLoad give me more?

p.s. - I have an A500+ (68000)

Hi,

Should I use WHDLoad for games that I can install normally? I have the original Colonization (I used to play this all the time) which did come with an installer .. should I just install it as normal? or I should download the WHDLoad version of it? What is best?

Sim085
