Getting data from PC to Amiga
« on: March 18, 2009, 10:44:00 AM »
I have an A1200 which had a 3.5" IDE hard drive in it.  I tried to get this working with an IDE cdrom drive at the same time but with no luck.  For some reason it could detect audio CDs but not data CDs (ones burnt on a PC).

I got a Compactflash adapter and 4GB card which I installed last night - its weird having a completely silent Amiga with the performance of the HD!

I had the idea of having a 1GB FAT partition which hopefully both the PC and Amiga could read but the PC doesnt detect the different drives on the CF card :-(

I hate relying on PC formatted floppy disks as they always seem to get corrupt very easily.  I have heard that Linux can read AFFS drives - it would be great if there was a bootable CD I could put into the PC which would boot into a simple linux OS which would be able to access my PC hard drive and the partitioned CF card.  If thats not possible then I could setup a machine with Linux if it is going to work...

So, What is the best way to get data from my PC to the Amiga?

Many Thanks
Allan

Hi as you have a 3.5 IDE HDD, connecting it direct to your PC and setting it up with WinUAE is your best bet.

KillerGorilla from EAB collated this wiki article. I have used it many times.

Good luck.

I will give that a try, even if it just to transfer files as I now really like having the Amiga completely silent :-)

Thanks

why don't you just use a PCMCIA to CF card adapter & 1GB CF card.  You can shuttle files easily between the two with that.  It could probably all be purchases for less then $25 (ebay).

There are a bunch of CF-PCMCIA adapters like the one AmigaKit sells. They work fantastic, and using the CF and FAT filesystem drivers on Amiga means you can use DOS/Windohs formatted flash cards to transfer easily.

Linux does support Amiga filesystem which I use pretty often for backing up Amiga hard drives (and now Flash IDE disks). I can't tell you much about Windohs since I switched my PC to Linux from MS-DOS 6 & Windohs 3.1 haha. WinUAE exists and is popular, and I think supports AFFS.

An A1200 compatible PCMCIA ethernet card costs $20-30 and will let you transfer over your LAN or the internet, which is another option.

Good luck.

I tried this,  but the "Add Hard Drive" button was ghosted out. One site suggested running WinUAE with the -disbaleharddrivesafetycheck option to activate the button, which didn't work.

I'm running WinUAE on a Vista Boot Camp partition on an Intel iMac. The drive in question is connected via FireWire and shows up fine in Vista. I assume that because the drive is "removable," I won't be able to format it and set it up under WinUAE?

WinUAE has to be run as administrator for direct harddisk access. On WinXP is is sufficient to have an administrator account. On Vista you have to right-click the icon and choose "run as administrator". Or change the shortcut's properties to always run as administrator.

Bye,
Thomas

Thanks for the information. I set WinUAE (and AMiKit) to run as administrator, and the button activates. Unfortunately, the external HD does not appear in the resulting dropdown list. I'm guessing the drive has to be internal.

Not without finding either an IDE or PCMCIA controller for your 500. I'm pretty sure only one of those exists.

If you can find a SCSI controller for the 500, you might be able to find an IDE to SCSI adapter, but that may not exist either.
