A1200 w/2Hard disks?
« on: March 12, 2009, 07:48:36 AM »
I just found on ebay a cable that allows 2 hard disks to be plugged in to the Amiga's HD port.  I was wondering if this is hard on the amiga since its made to only support 1 disk.  I would like to get this and put 2 Compact flash cards in place of the HD I think I could get them to fit under the Keyboard.  Just need to know it won't hurt my wonderful Amiga.

Thanks

am not sure but in standred 1200 ide port is not buffered
meaning when your using 3 1/2 ide hard drives not standred 1200 small laptop type u need keep cables short
l did run internal ide cdrom drive on alonger cable so its should be okay u can get buffered boards for the 1200 and there not expensive amd not sure u need to though.
u might just find it be bit slower without.

good luck

Why not use something like this: http://www.raidsonic.de/en/pages/products/metstyle_detail.php?we_objectID=5409

I've also seen devices which allow to use up to six SD cards as one IDE drive.

Bye,

keep the cable lengths short(er) and you should be fine.
there look like cards soon to be released(?) that plug into CF card slots that take multiple microSD cards
plus CF card adapters that take two CF cards....

all good fun :-)

Wow This is really incredible.  This is what I need.  Is this for sure compatible with the Amiga, and What the largest capacity the Amiga will allow me to have.  As I want to have At least 10GB if not more in this thing to handle all the retro gaming Demos and Old images and every other Nostalgic thing for it I can get my hands on.

Thanks for the find.

127 GB.

I personally use 2 x 8 GB CF cards on a dual CF adapter in an A4000.

I ran a HD and cdrom on one modified ide cable in my old a1200 for several years without a buffered interface with no problems at all.

The ide port is designed to take 2 devices, 4 if using a buffered ide interface.

I would go with docq's suggestion as they are cheap as chips and work very well.

Where is it said that Amiga is made to support only 1 disk? I've always used more devices on Amigas. Amigas that have IDE port will have same rules than on any other IDE bus. Master and slave per port. That makes two devices for internal port or if it's splitted as two ports, then 4 devices.

At the moment I have 2,5"->2,5"+3,5" cable on my A1200/030 with 2,5" HD as master and 3,5" CF-adapter (with card) as slave. I boot from CF if it's plugged in. So, I can't see any problem with two CF cards.

With hard drives as master/ slave set-up will work 100%.

With 2 CF cards thats not so certain.  I could never get a hard drive or cdrom and a compavt flash to work together on the A4000 IDE bus, and that is supposed to be buffered unlike the A1200.  you *may* not get the two CF's to work, even though in theory it *should*

My Man reason for this is to get the maximum space on the system.  So if I get a drive thats close to 127G or more what can I do to make it work.  Do I need to run any software.  I have seen that people have issues with drives past 4G and I really want to put all my amiga goodies in one place.  With the obvious back up on my 1TB drive.

I have an old 60G laptop drive I was thinking about putting in there.  Going to get everything going on the WinUAE first then swap it out for the internal drive.

Whatcha think.

Search the forum for large disk support...it's been covered many times so there is plenty of help around for you  :-) .

If you use WB3.0/3.1 you will have to patch the filesystem to support the large disk but if you use 3.9 this supports large disks already.

I've also had 2 3.5 harddrive connected to my Amiga1200 with that kind of cable. Actually it worked fine, but the only issue, was hiding the disks. It's not a pretty sight, having 2 gigantic drives dangling from your Amiga..!

New solution.  I just salvaged a 60G drive from a failing laptop.  (Screen is going out)  I would like to make this work.  Finding info is not easy since it all was written for people with a strong knowledge of Amiga hardware.  Well when your still wet behind the ears yet we need a little more direction.  I did look up the info listed by ClassicWB on how to deal with drives larger than 2g.  I do have this down.  I need to make the 1st partition small I don't need more than 400MB really. IT will be for OS and Programs.  The rest will be demos and games.  (Ultimate WHD Machine)  I haven't registered yet but will be as soon and I can afford it.  I've scraped together everything I can either swapping or salvaging and trading labor to get where I am with the hardware restoration.  still need blizz 1230 scsi addon CD drive and this hd to work  plz help.

Thanks in advance to all who help.

You're pretty safe if the boot partition is 2 gig and under, i ran a large disk without the patches and had 2 partitions of just under 4 gig and one of 2 gig...this worked fine.
