Default Using 4mb SIMMS with GVP Series II HD+8 Card

Hi,

I've pulled both of my 1mb 30pin simms out of my GVP Series II HD+8 card and replaced them with 2 4mb simms and set jumpers for 8mb mem.

The full 8mb shows just fine in sysinfo and Workbench but now the A2000 gurus on cold boot but a left mouse click then or ctrl-L Amiga-R Amiga reset and the HardDrive boots just fine?

Replaced the 4mb's back with the 1mb's and Guru disappears...What's wit dat!

Thanks again in advance!
Tim

Addressing.

The HC-8+ wasn't designed for 4MB SIMMs, and as such, won't address the extra lines on any 4MB SIMM plugged in. The GVP controller for the A500 is able to do this, but not yours.

So, when the Ami boots, it asks the GVP what's going on, and...

Ami: 'Sup?
GVP: I be playin' wit my HD and 8 meg, yo!
Ami: true dat. Gimme some RAM, about 6 Meg, bro?
GVP: I's jus' funnin' ya, man, I ain't got no 8 Meg.
Ami: Dat's whack, homie! Nowse I gots ta bust a cap on yo a**!

At that point, the Ami gurus. This is because the GVP just passes on the info YOU told it by setting the jumper to 8M, when it can only see 256K or 1M (of the 4M SIMM) at the most. So, when the Ami wants some memory at that location, and doesn't get it, it thinks something's wrong (it is!), and goes into panic mode.

Hunt around for some 1M SIMMs, and just populate the 8 sockets, and save the 4M SIMMs for the A500 unit.

LOL!

That's about as good an explanation as I've seen :-)

Mind you I typically am not in congruent terms with such dialects, but that's a whole other can of worms, so let's leave it to that. Oh, and I think it's "frontin'" not "funnin'", right?
