Default MorphOS & AmigaOS

Hi,

I know there has been quite a lot of comments about comparing MorphOS and AmigaOS, but the way Im seeing it, arnt the two really quite seperate operating systems? MorphOS seems to be a full operating system, with the Amiga compatability as a feature. Why are you comparing them then?

Most likely, ofcourse, Im not seeing something ;-)

Because MorphOS is basically in competition for users with AmigaOS4.

It's a struggle for users and which OS gets native ports of good apps first..

Luckily they aren't that far apart, so it's feasible to port stuff between the OSes.

Because some of us find things a bit confusing. And then we don't know if we really want a Pegasos or an AmigaOne... And then everybody wants to help by giving their opinion :-P

Wouldnt the best solution is to get both :-D, If only we all had the cash :-).

About the development time: yeh, but I still think of OS4 and MOS as 2 seperate OSs in their own right that really should be competing for development.

Am I right in thinking Gensei added AmigaOS compatability just to get developers?

Nope, you're not. MorphOS was intended to be AmigaOS successor from the start, so that is the biggest reason, I think.

To get developers (and existing apps!), but of course also because
there was something they liked about Amiga. I mean, they could made it
compatible with Linux instead, but they didn't.

I agree that MorphOS and AmigaOS4 represent two different branches,
springing from the same "stem", that is AmigaOS3.x. Some people will
be interested in only one of these branches, for various reasons,
others will have an interest in both.

@ Wilse: Grumble....:-D

Yeh, I can see the MorphOS is based heavily on the Amiga ideals, of a good API and what not.

One their site however, do they even mention the word Amiga once :-). On their feature list, they discuss 680x0 and PPC compatability, but, I dont even know what Im aruging about anymore

Ahh well, time to start saving for both A1 and a Pegasus ;-)

Because they are very alike. They have similar look'n'feel, run same apps. From user point of view morphos IS amigaos.

Well... There is talk of compatibility with the Commodore AXXXX line of computers. They are most likely trying to avoid problems relating to trademark....

More than 90% of MorphOS code is in A/Box and AmigaOS compatibility was there from the beginning.

@Fedorenko

The battle between the said participants is similar to the good old IBM OS/2 Warp VS MS Windows wars i.e. who has the right to accession to old X86 16bit OS empire.

- Path A; Existing (16bit) ecosystem to IBM's 32bit ecosystem.
- Path B; Existing (16bit) ecosystem to MS's 32bit ecosystem.

In Amiga’s case;
- Path A; Existing (68K) ecosystem to MorphOS's ecosystem.
- Path B; Existing (68K) ecosystem to AmigaOS 4.0's ecosystem.

The ideal situation is to archive similar understanding (or agreements) like MS and DEC agreements (i.e. equal cross-licensing) in regards to VMS based designs (Windows NT has some code/concepts from both OS/2 and VMS). A potential war was avoided between MS and DEC due to cosy deals they signed together…

Fedorenko: having both might be ideal, unfortunately not all of us
have extra 1000+ euros to yet another computer.

MorphOS has it's roots on old Phase 5 development. While they made
revolutionary PPC turbos they never (in that time) got official
support to their idea of making PPC based AmigaOS. Looking back it's
quite interesting to see that AmigaInc/Hyperion now has been using
very same turbos to make PPC-OS4. Years ago Phase 5 was not preciated
and now they are shown to be essential for AMigaOS future :-)
