Surprise surprise.

Too many of their big sellers seem have issues like this going back to G3 iBooks (and probably further.)

I don't believe I'll ever buy another piece of Apple hardware (not counting bargain basement used stuff to mess with,) even though my G4 Powerbook treated me well until I got bored with OS X and got rid of it.

I had a problem with this Macbook not long after I got it. To be fair to apple they eventually repaired it free of charge after initially trying to say it was accidental damage.

On the other side of the coin, my iBook (G4) still work perfectly.

Really wish Apple would just sell the OS to use on any hardware at some point like XP or Vista.

Can't believe after all these years since 1984 they are still locked in to hardware. Almost seems sureal.

( I know AOS4.x is locked in, but hard to compare a 1000+ hobby users to, well, looking online at Apple in Q2 2008 had almost 11% World Wide "laptop" market share. source)

It seems to me that it makes more sense for a hobby OS with a small user base to be available for generic hardware than an OS which is available for use in pretty much any quantity for hardware which is readily available.

Because nVidia are allegedly lying about the problem not being present in the new 9600M. According to the article I read, some analysis of the chip revealed it still has the same dodgy 'bump' problem, but nVidia are flat out denying it. The 9400M that is used in the new MacBooks (and in the Macbook Pros as a secondary chip) is not affected.

Of course the real reason it's news here is because it's the done thing to {bleep}, whinge, moan and generally slag off Apple as it was for Microsoft 10 years ago.

Would be nice from a get more people to "try' it perspective for sure, but since I don't believe there is even one single developer being paid full time, that's would like asking for a pink Unicorn for Christmas.

Amazing a few people in their spare time can write ALL the drivers for all the hardware it supports so far in my view anyway. (Though not going to get in the x86 - PPC debate as they only have a license for PPC even if they hate PPC at this point and sleep with x86 boards their hands are tied as they have said over and over)

I think Apple is a much better position to support more hardware than the dudes doing AOS4.x part time.

But honestly I really don't know much about writing an OS...so...

Ever since Apple has moved to Intel chips, there really is no reason to purchase a Mac, build a Hackintosh but this is not for everyone as updates and changes to hardware require a bit more intervention with the unix kernel than most people would want, but hey for enthusiasts like me this is the most powerfull mac I have owned for the price, and Apple does not even sell something close to this bang for the buck.

OSx is just as stable on my Hackintosh as it was on my Mac Mini, never crashes (unlike my Vista64 and Xp drives on the same system)

im agree with nine3o hackintosh is superior to apples hardware, you can build a more powerfull computer with a low cost than imac for example with same stability.

Another thing is if someone wants this "desing" or this snobism.

To clarify your amazingly cynical point of view, it's news because I got it posted in my inbox from geek.com and thought it might be of interest. ...also for the record I don't {bleep}, whinge, moan and generally slag off Apple or Microsoft because it's the done thing.

For what it's worth, I have one of the new 15" Unibody MacBook Pros, and have had no hardware problems with it at all. I love it. It's the nicest laptop Apple's made yet... and it's easily the most solid laptop I've ever used.

(And I didn't pay for it out-of-pocket... two months of iPhone App sales paid for it for me. hehe.)
